Reasons to Choose a Villa or Estate over a Hotel or Resort

April 3rd, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

When searching for an event location that will perfectly suit your vision, there are many factors to take into consideration beyond the aesthetics of the event space. Selecting a private estate or luxury villa for your event or getaway offers many rewards. We have included some of the top reasons why you should opt for a villa or estate for your next celebration.

No Food & Beverage Minimums for Events

Whether you are hosting an intimate dinner for 15 close friends or an elaborate wedding for 300, food and beverage minimums at hotels, resorts, and even restaurants have the ability to consume your budget extremely quickly. By selecting a private property for your getaway or estate wedding, you have the flexibility to determine your own budget for food and beverage. Some may be concerned that outside of a hotel or resort, you will lose the services that make an event or vacation relaxing and luxurious, but with all of the concierge services currently available, you can still feel like you are on vacation. Private chefs, maid services, and transportation services can all be arranged for any villa or estate.

Complete Privacy

There may be nothing worse than tacky tourists lingering around your event, or event worse, showing up uninvited. Private Estates and Villas offer complete privacy to you and your guests, allowing you to relax, enjoy the scenery, and most importantly, allow your event or stay to be all about you.

Escape the “box” of Hotel Ballrooms

Although hotel or resort events may be convenient for most, when it comes to creating a unique event, private estates and villas definitely have the advantage. To transform a standard ballroom, thousands of dollars are spend on specialty lighting, fabric draping, and other specialty decor. With a private property, there is no need to cover up the existing spaces, only enhance what is already present, so in the end, you end up spending substantially less to create a original event space.

Here are some of our favorite hotel/ resort alternatives for your luxury vacation or event:

Plan the Perfect Backyard Wedding

March 19th, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

For those brides that envision their big day taking place in a warm, private, welcoming setting, they may need to look no further than their own backyard. With the ability to rent a private estate or other private property for your wedding, you can bring the idea of a backyard wedding to life, even if your own backyard is not property suited to host your guest count or convey your chosen wedding style. Read on to discover some of our best tips on how to make your backyard wedding a success.

Add Charm to Organic Elements

By adding thoughtful details to trees, landscaping, and other outdoor settings, you can elevate your wedding’s aesthetic and theme. Hang chandeliers, flowers, candles, crystals, or framed photos from trees. Trim pathways with shepherd’s hooks holding flowers and candles. Hang flower buds from a patio cover. The options for adding details are truly endless, so don’t be afraid to let your creativity run wild!

Add Personal Touches

By adding personal touches, such as family photos and meaningful keepsakes,  you can transform any estate or venue into a space that feels like home. Aside from placing personal items on dining or cocktail tables, you can also also replace existing items with personal ones. For example, if your venue has a collection of photos or decor that does not speak to your vision, replace them with framed engagement photos or wedding photos from your parents or grandparents.

Feature Romantic Lighting

Nothing compliments a backyard or garden setting better than soft candlelight, market lighting, or chandeliers. Market Lighting is a great way to light large areas of space for a reasonable price while adding a charm that compliments almost any event theme.

Utilize Various Locations Around Your Property

With the amazing flexibility of a home or estate, you have the ability to use different locations for the different events of your wedding, rather than being confined to one ballroom. By utilizing different locations, your guests will feel as though they have fully experienced and explored your venue.

Here are some of our favorite backyard wedding venues that will make you feel right at home:

The Emma Estate (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) | Casa Corinna Estate (Santa Ynez, CA) | Hedgebound of Cape Cod (Cape Cod, MA)

Elegant Barn Weddings

March 6th, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

For those who prefer a wedding location a bit more outside the box, a barn could be the perfect solution.

Barn weddings combine the charm of natural surroundings and rich history, evoking a true sense of warmth.

We’ve compiled tips, event inspiration, and potential barn wedding locations to help you plan the perfect, elegant barn wedding.

Add Elegant Elements

Event though your wedding may be taking place in a rustic barn where tractors and animals were once housed, that does not mean that your barn wedding has to be entirely rustic.

Add elegant elements, such as dramatic fabric draping and chandeliers to transform the rustic space into an chic, romantic setting.

Elegant Barn Weddings & Ideas

Given that barns are often huge in size (and feature extremely high ceilings), incorporating elegant elements that would generally be found in an upscale home or hotel can also help to bring a more intimate feel to the barn and personalize the space.

Embrace the Barn’s History & Charm

When choosing a unique venue, it is always a great idea to share the location’s history or significance with your guests.

Include a story of how the barn came to be or use a silhouette of the barn in your paper products and invitations.

Embrace the barn’s charm by incorporating classic “barn” elements, such as hay bails.

Barn Wedding Venues

Use Natural Elements & Fabrics

By using natural colors, fabrics, and elements into your florals and decor, you will create an event space that is complimentary to your surroundings and the architecture of the barn.

For example, the incorporation of twigs, assorted vases, mason jars, and burlap table runners (below) brings the feeling of the barn and surrounding land to the dining table.

Barn Wedding Locations

In addition to showcasing beautiful rustic and barn weddings, this blog also features a Rustic Wedding Venuesguide to help you find the perfect ranch wedding location.

Modern Mansion Weddings

March 2nd, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

When choosing an estate location for your wedding, there are an endless amount of options, each unique in their own way. Although rustic ranch weddings and romantic garden weddings have been extremely popular with such blogs as Style Me Pretty and Green Wedding Shoes, you may also want to entertain the option of a chic and contemporary modern mansion wedding.  Take a look below to see some of our top pics and tips for a wedding at a modern mansion.

Let your Modern Mansion’s Architecture Inspire Your Wedding Aesthetic

After selecting a unique estate wedding location, it is important to begin to create an experience for your wedding guests.  Take in the architecture of your estate, including the location’s surroundings, colors, and exterior elements to inspire your event theme and decor.  By nodding to the estate’s architecture, your guests will enjoy your wedding celebration in a harmonious environment.

Above is the Glass House Estate in Palm Springs, California. This estate’s architecture and interior design illustrate the true essence of palm springs: modern architecture, bold and bright colors, and a focus-drawing aqua blue pool. To create a true modern Palm Springs wedding, highlight the bold colors and contemporary style, as is shown in this Modern Wedding from Wedding Chicks.

Choose Chic & Modern Apparel for your Wedding Party

Although there is a certain charm to an antiqued lace wedding dress or a full three-piece suit for men, it is important to keep the wedding apparel clean & chic to complement you entire wedding theme. Try to harness fashion forward or retro vintage trends, chic lines, and a specific color palate for your event. If you have chosen bold colors for your wedding or a location that is modern and contemporary, try to keep this all in mind when selecting each item of the bridal party’s apparel.

Don’t Be Afraid to Add Personal Touches

Modern Mansions can be the perfect blank slate for many event themes, but they can quickly transition to “too simple” or “devoid of warmth” if you do not add personal touches into the wedding decor. Clean lines, furnishings, and decor or fabulous, but they can also occasionally look generic, so don’t be afraid to add personal touches, such as framed black and white family photos, nods to your history as a couple, or elements that reflect you as a couple. These touches will not only warm the space with personality, but will make sure that your wedding is uniquely you.

Wedding Worthy Looks from the 2012 Oscars

February 27th, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

When searching for the perfect look for your big day, why not think beyond the bridal salon. Whether you are planning a romantic garden estate wedding or a glamorous contemporary wedding, these notable Oscar looks could be worth considering as your wedding gown.

This white cape dress by Tom Ford was the epitome of chic elegance. The clean lines of the gown, the tasteful addition of a rhinestone cuff bracelet, and Gwyneth Paltro’s sleek and chic ponytail were the perfect combination, bringing her to the top of most Best Dressed lists for the Oscars this year.

Esperanza Spalding‘s rendition of “What a Wonderful World” was almost as beautiful as this pale blue gown, created by Prophetik by Jeff Garner. This stunning combination or fabrics is both romantic and fairy tale-esque and would serve as beautiful compliment to any wedding location or theme.

Red was clearly the winning trend of the evening on the red carpet.  Michelle Williams (in Louis Vuitton), Emma Stone (in Giambattista Valli Couture), and Natalie Portman (in Vintage Christian Dior)  wowed Oscar viewers and commentators alike. Incorporating regal tones of red into your wedding attire choices is a beautiful and striking way to add some Hollywood glamour into your event.

Event Inspiration from the World of Design

February 25th, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

When searching for design inspiration or design principles to follow, sometimes it is most beneficial to look beyond the greats of the event planning industry. By looking to other inspired designers, whether they are in fashion or interior design, can help to focus the details of your event to create a cohesive plan for your event. We asked Couture Events‘ owner, Krystel Tien, a bit about her favorite fashion, interior design, and event planning inspirations and where she finds inspiration for her events…

Who do you admire most in the world of Fashion, Design, and Event Planning?

Event Planning:   In the world of event planning I most admire Mindy Weiss. She is a coordinator to the stars and so passionate about her events. Time and time again I am wowed by what she creates. I admire her work and the business she has built. Her blog is incredible (definitely a daily read or “look” as she mostly posts photos) and she   recently wrote a wonderful book, “The Wedding Book.” I am always so excited to see what she will do next!

Interior Designer:   I adore Rachel Ashwell, Queen of shabby chic; she is my favorite interior designer. I love the shabby chic style and the warm feelings that come with it. With white washed glamour, chandeliers, soft pastels, textured wood, and vintage books, she creates dreamlike spaces. I love the idea of creating a dreamlike space for our clients, shabby chic or not. I had the chance to  meet Rachel Ashwell once while she was here in San Diego: such a sweetheart and design visionary!

Stylist:   I love Rachel Zoe, fashion stylist and designer. She is a stylist to many celebrities and just came out with her own clothing line. I love the way she works, paying close attention to every detail: every ring and every bracelet matters. We take the same approach with weddings and events, every detail matters, down the the fork. She uses contrasting elements, such as combining chunky with soft and delicate, and we think this is a concept that should apply to every aspect of an event.

Designer:   Last but not least, Coco Chanel is our greatest fashion inspiration. Her pieces are timeless, sophisticated, and treasured! Everything she creates is couture, one of a kind, and handmade! We think when you look back on your event 50 years from now you should still be able to say, wow that was gorgeous! Not… what was I thinking! Coco?s pieces have only gotten better over time and are even more respected and appreciated now!

Where do you find inspiration for your events?

I get my inspiration from the world around me, from a beautiful sunset, a gorgeous painting, fashion, different parts of the world and cultures, and of course Pinterest.

I took a trip to Europe this past summer and I was so inspired by every place we went, London, Paris, and Versailles. After being in these places I could create a million events just from the wonders I saw on the trip. I have also traveled to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Mexico, and the Carribean and each of these locations has affected how I design and create events.

I also thrive off of my clients; we sometimes ask them to bring in one item that defines what they want for their wedding day! I love when they bring me one little thing that tells their story. I can look at an item and see the entire event, not just the item. It’s always a beautiful glimpse into their life. For example, imagine a Cameo inspiring an entire Versailles-esque event or a vintage rhinestone necklace inspiring an event of classic glamour.

Tips for Planning the Perfect Mansion Wedding

February 21st, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

If you choose a mansion or an elaborate historic home as your wedding venue, your guests are truly in for a treat. In addition to the wow-factor that a mansion wedding brings, there are many opportunities to make your ceremony and reception completely unique. We have compiled some great tips to make the most of your mansion location for your big day.

Highlight the Mansion’s Architecture

With such beautiful features, such as columns, balconies, and elaborate staircases, the addition of even simple event lighting can make a huge difference. For example, by utilizing up-lighting at your mansion wedding, you can add visual interest, color, and create an energetic background for your ceremony or reception.

Let the Mansion’s Surroundings Inspire Your Wedding Flowers

By using your wedding venue as your inspiration for your wedding flowers and centerpieces, your thoughtful observations will only enhance the mansion’s beauty and your guests’ experience. If your mansion is set near a forest or foothills, incorporate wild flowers, twigs, feathers, or other organic elements into your floral arrangements.  If your venue is near a field of flowers that will be in full bloom for your wedding, incorporate that flower or color into your event decor. The possibilities are endless, so be sure to take in every detail of your mansion and the mansion’s surroundings.

Use Your Mansion’s History to Find Your Wedding Theme

Instead of choosing a theme inspired by a color palate, why not delve into your mansion’s history to inspire your big day? If your mansion was built in the 20′s, include vintage 1920′s accents, a la the Great Gatsby. Play a few jazz songs from the era, serve a signature cocktail in a tea cup (to remind your guests of the Prohibition Era), or rent on old vintage Model-T for your getaway at the end of the evening. You could even include an insert about the mansion’s history in your wedding program. By giving a nod to your venue’s history, your guests will feel that they have not only attended a beautiful wedding, but have taken a journey back in time.

Below we have listed a few of our favorite mansion wedding locations. Take a look if you are still perfect for that perfection mansion location for your wedding or other event:

Lone Star Mansion   |  Chateau de Beverly Hills   |  The Abbey Estate   |  Cairo Estate

Plan the Perfect Ranch Wedding

February 2nd, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

With their beautiful scenery, natural charm, and privacy, private ranches are an ideal location for events. With ranch venue locations covering the country, whether you are planning a destination wedding or looking for a wedding venue close to home, there is definitely a ranch location that will fit your vision to perfection.

When planning a ranch wedding, there are many factors to take into consideration in order to make your big day both inspired and successful.  We’ve compiled some great tips to assist and guide you through the process of planning a ranch wedding.

Draw Inspiration from the Ranch

When looking for inspiration for your wedding details and theme, draw inspiration from the Ranch itself. Take  in the architecture of the ranch house, the natural surroundings, and the flowers that will be blooming at the time of year of your wedding. By choosing your ranch wedding location first, it will allow you to make sure that all of the details of your wedding coordinate perfectly with your surroundings.

For the Holman Ranch (pictured above), imagine incorporating yellow as one of your wedding colors and strands of market lighting hanging from the towering oak trees. By drawing inspiration from the ranch, your guests will truly feel though they have experienced a wedding that is both unique and cohesive.

Be Creative with Ranch Elements

Don’t be afraid to get creative with ranch elements: by incorporating items found on the ranch, such as found wood, crates, or even tractors, your wedding will become fun and original. Use a tractor to make your grand entrance, start a campfire for S’mores, or have your guests sit on barrels of hay (covered in a fun fabric) for ceremony seating. Be sure to ask the property owner if there are any unique items that are available for use– you never know what they may find!

Fun & Functional Footwear

Given that you and your guests will undoubtedly be walking on grass, dirt, or another natural surface, opt for fun and functional footwear. Wearing cowboy boots, fun flats, or wedges will not only allow you to enjoy exploring the property, but will also add to the charm of your ranch wedding. Also, be sure to let your guests know that your wedding is in a natural setting; after all, four-inch stilettos and dirt don’t mix.

Take a look at our ranch wedding locations below:

Holman Ranch (Carmel Valley, CA)  |  Lower Lake Ranch (Pine, CO)

Beaumont Ranch (Grandview, TX)  |  Pine River Ranch (Leavenworth, WA)

Top Five Wedding Styling Tips for 2012 by Couture Events

January 18th, 2012 - By Jamie Ehrsam

Allow me to introduce myself, I am Krystel, owner of Couture Events! I am a wedding stylist, designer, and coordinator.  I am so honored to be a guest blogger for Estate Weddings and Events. Each month I will be sharing the latest tips, trends, styles, and wedding ideas with you!

Many of our clients come to us for styling advice and as we start out the new year we thought it might be best to share with you our top styling tips for 2012

Couture’s Top Five Wedding Styling Tips for 2012

 1. Bohemian is Beautiful

Kate Moss proved this with her gorgeous bohemian styled wedding attire. She has set the trend for 2012 as we see many of our brides asking for light, soft, and airy accents along with sheer, barely there fabrics and delicate details. Some of our favorite elements from Kate’s wedding are her Juliet cap veil and the white flower garland headpieces on the bridal party, so boho chic.

 2. Muted Colors are IN!

Nudes and blushes for everything including wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, florals, and makeup. Yes, you heard us, this year we are seeing more colored wedding gowns in muted tones. We are also seeing many brides choosing muted bridesmaid dresses, a nude wedding lip, and going with soft blush and cream florals.

*Tip: If you decide on a muted color gown, DO NOT choose muted or nude bridesmaid dresses as this will only wash everyone out. Remember you want to stand out on your special day, no matter if it is white or a beautiful blush.

 3. Lighting is Everything

Lighting is the single best way to transform any venue from ordinary to extraordinary! In 2012 creative lighting will take precedence in the wedding decor and budget. We will be seeing more chandeliers, up-lighting, gobos, market lights, and candles, all of which help create an incredible ambiance for your guests to enjoy.

 4. Glam is Back

While we have had so much fun with the rustic styling, we see that Glam is coming back and we couldn’t be more excited.  Whether iconic black & white, gold and silver accents, or just the sparkle (crystals, rhinestones, glitter, and shimmer), we are seeing many brides bring some bling into their wedding. Every detail is becoming more glamorous in both vintage and modern wedding themes, brides are embracing the GLAM look.

 5. Long Banquet Tables are Luxurious

We will be seeing many long rectangle tables with pretty runners and assorted sized centerpieces. Round is out, brides no longer want just one centerpiece, they want assortments of bottles, vases, candles, and florals at all different heights to entertain the eye and bring dimension to the tables. They also like the idea of family style banquet tables, creating a more intimate feel.
