Honeymoon in Ireland: 5 Must-Visit Spots

March 12th, 2013 - By

Honeymoon in Ireland Cork Ballymaloe House

Let the luck o’ the Irish help you along the path to wedded bliss with a honeymoon in Ireland.

No matter what your style or interest, this wondrous European escape will captivate you.

For Foodies: Cork County

Ireland’s largest county, Cork, spans the majority of the island’s southwestern tip and is renowned for its coastline, food, and lineup of quaint and vibrant towns. From Cork City’s urban amenities to the region’s fertile farmland and wild peninsulas and islands, Cork is one of Ireland’s most varied landscapes.

Foodie couples should head to the county’s eastern portion, known to have some of the finest Irish country cooking around.

Before we get to the gastronomical activities, can we just take a moment to admire eastern Cork’s storied history? This is where you’ll find Cobh, the illustrious Titanic’s final port of call, and heritage towns like Youghal, which is where Moby Dick was filmed in the 1950s and Sir Walter Raleigh once served as mayor.

But if Irish flavor is what you seek, then check out Ballymaloe House about 20 miles from Cork city in Shanagarry. Situated on a 400-acre estate, this classic country house hotel and restaurant has been run by the same family for more than 40 years. Its roots go back much further, though – the Norman Castle was built circa 1450!

Get situated with a walk around the gardens or make your way to the lawn for some croquet and champagne. In the restaurant, Friday night dinner is an extra special affair with a hors d’oeuvres buffet of local seafood from nearby Kenmare Bay served alongside a selection of pates and salads. Ballymaloe House also hosts a series of wine events throughout the year.

One night here and you’ll no doubt feel inspired to get in the kitchen yourself and the Allen family’s Ballymaloe Cooking School is the place to do it. Set in the middle of a 100-acre organic farm, the school’s focus is on the slow food movement and students use produce and ingredients picked straight from the family’s crop.

And this May the culinary celebrations continue with the inaugural Ballymaloe Literary Festival of Food & Wine. On deck is an array of interesting lectures on food books, as well as a diverse range of cooking demonstrations, food trails, workshops, and literary dinners.

Staying in Shanagarry means easy access to Midleton Farmers Market and Cork city’s English Market, two of the country’s best.

The first takes place on Saturday mornings and brings together 12 local farmers and purveyors selling fresh produce, organic meat, farmhouse cheese and more. The English Market is a legendary Irish tradition dating back to the times of King James I in the 1600s and is a more exotic emporium of imported goods along with local produce.

Honeymoon in Ireland West of Ireland Delphi Mountain Resort

image via Delphi Mountain Resort

For Adventure: West of Ireland

Are you an outdoor enthusiast-type of couple? Consider West of Ireland for your honeymoon. It’s an enchanting area rich with heritage and tradition where soaring mountains and craggy countryside are ripe for exploration. Tranquil lakes and scenic beaches also make West of Ireland an ideal escape for water-sports.

At Delphi Mountain Resort adventure comes by land and sea in the form of crag (rock) climbing, sea kayaking and more.

As part of the Mweelrea Massif – one of Ireland’s highest peaks – Delphi Mountain Resort’s rock climbing cliff overlooks Killary Fjord (the country’s only one, by the way!). Sign up for crag climbing and you’ll hike about 30 minutes to this point then spend the rest of your time scaling and rappelling with the guidance of an expert instructor.

Sea kayaking takes you into the fjord itself, in search of seals and other wildlife with stunning sections of coastline as your backdrop. Offering a fresh perspective on Ireland’s environment and history, plan ahead to set foot on one of the surrounding islands and visit a famine village to learn about the economic and agrarian crisis that swept the country in the mid-1800s.

There’s plenty of excitement outside of Delphi Mountain Resort, too.

In May, the Leenane Mountain Walking Festival is a weekend of serious mountain walks and cycling. Walks are five and seven hours long, taking you through either the Maamturk Mountains or Devils Mother Mountain, or on a geological and natural history exploration of Killary Harbour and a working sheep farm.

Prefer to cycle? Hit a 31-mile trail through Loch Nafooey and surrounding areas or around the serene Renvyle Peninsula. The weekend costs about $80 per person and includes professional guides, transport to and from each adventure, evening entertainment and more.

Come fall, it’s time to hit the water again with The Great Fjord Swim. Set for Oct. 12, this is your chance to plunge into the deep, crisp waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The thrilling open-water event starts with you jumping off the side of a catamaran and then swimming to the finish line with the region’s awe-inspiring scenery as motivation. Measuring just under 10 miles long and 148 feet deep, the inlet is a safe and sheltered anchor thanks to the mountain ranges that surround its northern and southern borders.

Honeymoon in Ireland Mayo Ashford Castle

image via Ashford Castle

For History & Tradition: Mayo County

Located in northwestern Ireland, Mayo’s archeological heritage dates back to the prehistoric era when, sometime before 7000 BC, the first nomadic people settled the region.

Today Mayo is Ireland’s third largest county with a collection of small coastal villages perfect for visitors who truly want to get away. One of its main attractions is Achill Island, the country’s largest isle whose sandy beaches and seaside cliffs are a popular vacation spot.

But what’s a honeymoon in Ireland without a stay at an actual castle, right? Ashford Castle fits right in with Mayo’s historical importance, having been built in 1228 by the de Burgo family. Ashford Castle is a downright storybook setting, one complete with a view across Loch Corrib that’s remained nearly unchanged for the past 6,000-odd years.

The hotel’s architecture reflects the area’s regal charm (think Waterford chandeliers and Roccoco gilt mirrors) and has retained Ashford’s original style. On its lush estate, you have your pick of activities – everything from golf and archery to lake cruising and horseback riding through the countryside.

But should you find the time – or willpower! – to leave Ashford Castle’s magical grounds, there’s plenty of authentic Irish tradition to keep you busy.

At Joe Joyce’s sheep farm, learn how purebred border collies are trained to be sheepdogs and then watch as they nip and tuck, steering a small flock through gaps and gate. Joyce keeps some 200 sheep on the slug-like Ceean Garbh mountainside.

And speaking of herding sheep, classic movie buffs will be thrilled to learn that a number of scenes in the 1952 John Wayne film The Quiet Man were filmed in nearby Galway. You can even take a walking tour to the film’s main shooting locations.

For a look at another Irish architectural landmark visit Ballintubber Abbey, a 13th century church that is the only one in Ireland still in use founded by an Irish king. Established in 1216 by Cathal Crovdearg O’Connor, the abbey hosts retreats, pilgrimages and tours of more than 5,000 years of Irish culture through its Celtic Furrow Visitors Center.

Unsurprisingly, Ireland is also a country of many religious attractions. In Mayo county, Croagh Patrick near Westport is the spot where St. Patrick – the island’s patron saint credited for teaching its people about the Holy Trinity and banishing the snakes – summited and fasted for 40 days in 441 AD.

Honeymoon in Ireland Limerick County Adare Manor

image via Adare Manor

For Total Romance: Limerick County

“Ireland’s prettiest village” – that’s what Adare, set in Limerick county, dubs itself. Its medieval surroundings are situated on the Maigue river. Through the centuries, Adare has been the setting of many rebellions, wars and conquests that have left behind a monumental legacy.

Modern day Adare is a mixture of centuries with thatched cottages staking their claim among beautiful stone buildings, medieval monasteries and ancient ruins.  It’s a picturesque village where walking streets full of artsy shops is like a trip back in time.

For a totally romantic experience, book your honeymoon at Adare Manor. Every room at this luxurious estate is individually designed and many of them still feature details added by its original owners in the 1800s.

Explore Adare Manor’s lavish grounds and make time for a picnic for two packed with sandwiches, homemade cakes and a selection of fine local cheeses. Or, take in all 840 acres – French formal gardens, woodlands, and the river – from the sky with a hot air balloon ride.

Other village must-sees include The Desmond Castle, a 13th century strategic fortress, and The Trinitarian Priory.

The only recorded Trinitarian monastery in Ireland, this priory was built by the Fitzgerald Clan who was founded in France following the Crusades and whose main purpose was to raise money in order to rescue Christian captives taken by the Moors during the wars. Repaired in the 19th century, the Trinitarian Priory today is used by residents as the local Roman Catholic Church.

Limerick City is another regional attraction. Its lively city landscape boasts Georgian architecture, a number of grand museums, and some of the most dedicated rugby fans around. Colorful and energetic, Limerick City is home to pop-up restaurants, artisan cuisine, and a thriving music and arts scene.

Established by Vikings in the 9th century, this is a hub that thrives on individuality…maybe even a bit of quirkiness. Wander through the city’s collection of craft, leather and jewelry stores, where you can buy things like Celtic silver and a traditional blackthorn walking stick.

And at the White House – Limerick City’s oldest pub and a favorite haunt for poets, writers and wits – poetry can be your language of love. Every Wednesday, owner Barney Sheehan straps on a bow tie and MCs the event, which draws some of the area’s finest storytellers. Even Michael D. Higgins, Ireland’s current president, has recited his poetry here.

It may go without saying, but this city is where the term “limerick” for a short, witty poem came from.

Honeymoon in Ireland Dublin City Merrion Hotel

For Art: Dublin City

If an urban escape is what you seek, then the Republic’s capital is still your best bet. Voted the “Friendliest City in Europe” twice by TripAdvisor, Dublin is a city that’s excited to welcome you – just try having a pint with a local!

A major benefit of honeymooning in Dublin is that the city is extremely pedestrian-friendly, so you won’t have to worry about renting a car. Just as well, too, considering all of the pub opportunities.

Gracious city parks like Merrion Square and Iveagh Gardens are a big draw, as is Temple Bar – a cobblestoned cultural district of galleries, restaurants and the lively Meeting House Square.

For luxury accommodations in the heart of Dublin, stay at The Merrion. It’s a short walk to the “golden mile” of bars, shops and restaurants that dot popular St. Stephen’s Green, and the hotel itself is home to the two star Michelin-rated Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud.

The Merrion, built in Georgian style, is also a popular draw for Dublin’s art-focused visitors and locals, housing a museum-worthy collection of 19th and 20th century art that’s considered to be one of the best private collections in the country.

Another selling point for creative minds: Dublin’s galleries and museums are free! So you can gaze at stunning Bronze Age pieces in the National Museum or take in works from Van Gogh, Monet and Van Dyck at the National Gallery all at no cost.

And of course no honeymoon in Dublin would be complete without a stop at the Guinness Storehouse. Visit the Gravity Bar – at the top of seven stories – for views of rooftops, steeples and mountains with your pint.

Want a look inside Dublin’s literature-laced past? Join the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl, an actor-led tour of the city’s best storybook luminaries. You’ll hear all about WB Yeats, Ireland’s most famous poet, and his muse Maud Gonne then head around the corner to St. Ann’s Church, which was the site of Bram Stoker’s marriage to Florence Balcombe (Oscar Wilde’s ex-girlfriend).

Ireland Luxury Travel: Castles You Can Stay in Around the Emerald Isle

March 4th, 2013 - By

Best Ireland Castles: Dunguaire Castle, County Galway (credit: stahrdust3)

Imaginations of Ireland tend to conjure up visions of pots of gold, rainbows and mist-draped castles.

Actual visions of the country might not include a leprechaun and their overflowing pots of gold, but Ireland lives up to imaginations in the castle department.

For the traveler in search of refuge, many of those former Norman fortresses open up their doors and allow guests to sleep in their imaginations for the night.

The hundreds of years of history, the isolation and even a few ghost stories are all included in the room rate.

These Irish castles have transitioned from defensive strongholds to hospitable settings.

For a honeymoon in Ireland, a wedding venue or even just a luxurious getaway, travelers should consider resting up in these pieces of Irish history.

Ashford Castle

Ireland Castles: Ashford Castle

When you want to get away from the world, you might as well head to Ashford Castle on Ireland’s western edges.

Set up on over 350 acres of wooded parkland, the 13th century castle feels like it hasn’t been touched since its beginnings.

The Anglo-Norman De Burgo family founded the castle in 1228.

It would become their principal stronghold for a time until it changed hands and ultimately fell into the beer soaked fingers of Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness in 1852.

It wasn’t until 1939 that Ashford Castle would open up its doors to travelers in search of opulent shelter.

If Guinness is good for you, so too is the family’s former estate.

Ashford has that bubble surrounding it, one that seems impenetrable from chaos and harm.

With its backdrop of forests, lakes and mountains, guests check into the classic style rooms for the escapism.

Each room boasts its own touches, straying away from the cookie-cutter approach to most hotels.

Included in the room rate are the creaks of the floors and the chance to marvel at oil paintings that probably should be in museums.

Ashford Castle lends a number of activities for guests to take advantage on its grounds facing Lough Corrib.

You can play golf or shoot at clay pigeons.

Just beyond the castle’s grounds is the postcard perfect town of Cong.

The village was the setting for The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

The film almost single handedly opened up the floodgates of Americans to discover what Ireland was all about.

Ballygally Castle

Best Ireland Castles

The landscape up on Northern Ireland’s Antrim Coast is one of mist covered glens and causeways seemingly built by giants.

Resting up for the night in this setting comes with both history and legend.

Ballygally Castle positions on the scenic Antrim Coast.

The castle from 1625 gazes out on the sandy beaches of Ballygally Bay as it ponders its story.

James Shaw, a Scot looking for fortune in Ireland, constructed the now castle hotel.

Historians explain Ballygally Castle as a place of defense and residence in its early years.

It also functioned as a refuge for Protestants during civil wars.

By the 1950s, Ballygally Castle would transition into the role of hotel.

Renovated over the years, the castle features 44 bedrooms with a contemporary style.

However its older features are maintained throughout several turreted bedrooms.

If you prefer your luxury vacation to have a hint of legends and spirits, Ballygally Castle throws in the ghosts without an extra charge.

Shaw’s wife Isabella reportedly haunts the place, specifically in the appropriately named Ghost Room located in one of the oldest parts of the castle.

With ghost stories stretching across 400 years and its positioning on the tip of one of the world’s greatest road journeys, it is easy to see why hiding away in this Irish castle ticks all of the marks.

The setting compliments the spirit of the 17th century building.

Waterford Castle

Top Ireland Castles: Waterford Castle

Photo By Matt and Kim Rudge

The combination of both historic castle and island is incomparable.

Waterford Castle proudly positions on an estuary of the River Suir, just one mile down the river from Waterford City.

In order to reach this castle hotel, you must board the private ferry service between the city and the island.

Perhaps no other castle hotel in Ireland lends quite the level of seclusion for a vacation away than Waterford Castle.

The island’s life dates between the sixth and eight centuries when a monastic settlement was found on the grounds.

It would fall into the hands of the English Earl of Pembroke and cousin of Strongbow, Maurice Fitzgerald.

He would construct the first structure on the island, a Norman Keep.

Additions to the castle were made from 1849 to 1895.

Over the course of its time with the Fitzgerald family, the castle played host to a number of feasts and banquets.

By 1987, the Waterford Castle would turn into a luxury hotel.

The luxury hotel keeps things intimate with just 19 guest rooms.

Suites are decorated with antique furnishings, Waterford crystal lamps, four poster beds and even marble fireplaces in some cases.

Guests have 310 acres of private island to explore on any number of nature trails.

You can pack a picnic and spot the wildlife on the island, which includes badgers and deer.

It isn’t hard to envision a Fitzgerald resting up for the night in a neighboring room at the Waterford Castle.

The mix of history and seclusion lends an Irish experience that you won’t find available for a good night’s sleep in most cases.

Dromoland Castle

Incredible Irish Castles: Dromoland Castle

It’s not everyday that one has the chance to rest up in a former home of Irish royalty.

Dromoland Castle sounds fictitious in name and description but it is not a figment of the imagination.

The castle boasts a history dating back to the 5th century.

It was the ancestral home of the O’Briens, direct descendants of Brian Borun, High King of Ireland.

The O’Briens were one of the few native Gaelic families of royal blood.

Just 8 miles from Shannon Airport in County Clare, the estate presents itself in grand fashion with a meandering drive that approaches the grounds dramatically.

Hundreds of acres of magnificent lawns beckon the traveler in search of the Ireland of their imaginations.

Overlooking the golf course and sparkling lake, guests catch some ancient Zs throughout rooms decorated with old world elegance.

While all of the contemporary luxuries are readily available, you have the chance to play the part of an O’Brien by sleeping in the Queen Anne quadrangle of the hotel.

Sir Edward O’Brien built this section of 28 rooms in 1736.

The space of the castle prides itself on being a century older than the rest of five star hotels in Ireland.

Activities at Dromoland Castle range from hunting, fishing, horseback riding, golf, tennis and soaking up the spa.

Guests can also request fresh flowers, handmade chocolates and champagne to their rooms to truly feel like Irish royalty.

Dromoland Castle is famously known as one of Ireland’s best five star hotels.

Kinnitty Castle

Kinnitty Castle: Irelands best castles

By IrishFireside

Located in the village of Kinnitty in County Offaly in the Irish Midlands, Kinnitty Castle offers a taste of the 13th century.

Basking in the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Ireland’s Midlands, the castle has foundations in a 1213 Norman castle.

While destroyed in a fire in the 1920s, the castle was rebuilt in keeping with a neo gothic style.

Kinnitty Castle lords over 650 acres of parkland, lending a truly serene Irish castle experience.

The 37 guest rooms adorn in high ceilings, cast iron roll top baths and original features in keeping with the period of the property.

Guided historical tours of Kinnitty Castle are offered along with plenty of activities like fishing, clay pigeon shooting and walks.

Then again, Kinnitty Castle is just the sort of place where one might find relaxing by an open fire of which unquestionably can pass the day.

Worlds best castles: Ireland

The drive up to these castles is sure to cause mouths to drop in wonder.

A hotel could just be a hotel, but in Ireland, travelers in search of a little luxury will find a hotel can be a grand medieval castle, a standing testament to time.

And while a great deal is included in the room rate from antique covered rooms to classic activities that the former owners would probably appreciate, visions of leprechauns and pots of gold might cost extra.

Valentine’s Day Ideas: What to Do & What to Buy

February 7th, 2013 - By

RegardlessValentines Day Gift Ideas of your thoughts on Valentine’s Day (hate or love it!), if you’re in a relationship, then you’re expected to celebrate the holiday in some way.

If you hate it, you better suck it up and come up with a sweet gesture or gift for your special someone.

You don’t have to buy a greeting card, box of chocolates, or bouquet of red roses to make your lady/man feel loved.

Here are a few romantic ideas to help you get started…

On a budget:

1. Hand written love note

Valentines Day Ideas: handwritten love note

Women are complicated…to say the least.

But I’ve never met a woman who has ever favored a Hallmark card over a hand written note.

Buy some nice paper, or even a blank card, and start thinking of ways to write about how special she is to you.

It doesn’t have to be an essay, rather some carefully chosen words to express why you love this person.

Start with a story, a memory, or anything that captures a great time you’ve spent together.

Ladies, although your guy may not admit it, he’d love a note as well.

2. Framed picture of the two of you

In the digital age, we often forget to print out all the photos we take with our digital cameras.

At least I do!

Try to find a few photos that are worthy of display in your house.

Buy a few nice frames, pop in the photo, and voilà, a gift she’ll treasure forever!

Other ideas on a budget:

3. Home cooked dinner or picnic for two, including dessert

4. Find a Groupon or Living Social deal for wine tasting nearby

5. Make your own coupons for a back massage, foot massage, etc. for your partner to redeem

6. Rent a romantic movie and make homemade gourmet popcorn

7. Create a scavenger hunt around her house with clues that lead to small presents

8. Do all the chores around her house for a week

9. Take a walking tour of your nearest city, visit a few new places or old landmarks

10. Create a mix CD(or digital compilation) of your favorite love songs that remind you of them

Feeling bold:

1. Buy lingerie

Victoria's Secret Valentine Lingerie

If you know her underwear/bra size and feel confident you can pick out something that she’d like (and that you’d like to see her in as well), then this might be the gift idea for you.

There is nothing more awkward than receiving clothing in a size too large or small, so when in doubt, buy a gift card for the value of the item(s) and take her to the store to try them on.

Whether it comes from Victoria’s Secret or Agent Provacateur, she’ll love how daring you are!

2. Take her to a dance class to learn to tango, salsa, or something as equally spicy!

Valentines Date Ideas: salsa dancing

Take the lead on this one, and surprise her with a night of dancing.

She will be impressed by your bravery to try something new and different!

Maybe you’ll get to use these moves again at your estate wedding or honeymoon!

Other bold ideas:

3. See a burlesque show

4.  Go to an underground supper club dinner

5. Camping/Glamping

6. Karaoke to your favorite duet in front of a crowd

7. Get a tattoo to commemorate your love

8. Aphrodisiac cooking class

9. Sky dive, hang glide, bungee jump or zip line

10. Elope!

Over the top:

If you consider yourself the ultimate romantic, then you’re probably glossing over these ideas thinking they aren’t nearly suited for the love of your life.

You want to spoil him or her rotten!

1. Rent or buy out a favorite location, at least for a little while!

Date Ideas for Valentines: ice rink date

Whether this be an ice skating rink, a private dining room at your favorite restaurant, find a spot you can call your own for at least an hour or so.

This one-on-one time will make your date feel incredibly special!

2.  Hire a celebrity chef to prepare a custom meal for two at a unique location.

celebrity chef private dinner - valentines date idea

Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Richard Rosendale, and Jerome Bocuse – Neiman Marcus Fantasy Gift

If you’re going all out, you might as well do something completely unexpected!

Neiman Marcus debuted a fantasy gift last year with a private dinner for 10 with world renowned chefs for a whopping $250,000.

Hire a well know chef, someone you’ve seen on the likes of Top Chef, to create the most memorable meal ever!

Rent a Private Estate for a Valentines Day Date

The Cairo Estate – San Juan Capistrano

Rent a private estate and enjoy your own private restaurant!

This is bound to knock your date’s socks off as the best date of all time!

Other over the top ideas:

3. A day of ultimate pampering at the spa after the perfect day of shopping.  Better get her a beautiful new ring to go with her manicured nails!

4. A private boat ride on the Duoro river in Porto, Portugal, with luxury Port and chocolate tastings

5. A whirlwind trip to a warm climate, spend your Valentine’s day at an all-inclusive resort where neither of you have to lift a finger

6. A private concert with your favorite artist

7. Re-enact her favorite romantic scene from her favorite movie, and take her to the exact place it was filmed

8. Have a star named after her, and take her to an observatory for a private dinner and viewing of her star, wherever that may be

9. Chauffeured private car to Europe’s most famous landmarks, or other excursion through AutoVenture

10.  Nothing on this planet good enough for your sweetheart?  How about a trip into outer space on Virgin Galactic

Gift Ideas for your Man:

So your guy may not love that bouquet of flowers as much as you do, so here are a few gifts that you know they’ll love.

After they’ve surprised you with one of the dates mentioned above, aren’t they deserving of a fantastic date of their own?

1. The “Man” date

Valentines Day Gift Ideas for him

Sometimes a dinner for two is nice, but its time to take your guy out to do something he’d really enjoy.

Go-Kart racing, a game of golf, a concert featuring his favorite band, rent a sports car, etc.

Anything that puts him at the center of attention will do the trick!

2.  The gift of booze

A gift basket of specialty beers may be the perfect way to your man’s heart.

The Sexiest Sunglasses for Your Next Beach Vacation

January 25th, 2013 - By Andrew D.

Starting at the top and moving right: Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Roberto Cavalla and Balenciaga.

While a majority of the country wraps themselves up in fleece blankets near the fireplace, the avid luxury traveler is relaxing in the sand.

No matter if you’re in Florida, the Caribbean or Southern California, you want to relax and look good.

The latter requires some sexy shades.

Here are our picks for the sexiest sunglasses to take with you on that next luxurious beach vacation.

1. Gucci

Gucci Designer Sunglasses

Let’s get this list started with a bang.

When you think of luxury, you think of Gucci.

The Italian designer’s sunglasses for 2013 are certainly nothing to scoff at.

In fact, for just under $400, you might be getting a luxurious bargain.

The Gucci Butterfly Rimless Sunglasses take a page out of the aviators’ playbook, but with a hint of elegance: A small silver tone butterfly is perched on the corner of these cute shades.

Oh, and a pair of these sun blockers offer 100 percent UVA/UVB protection.

Choose from colors of a light blue/gradient blue; yellow/gradient brown; and gold/gradient black.

2. Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs Designer Sunglasses

These Marc Jacobs’ shades are showing us a trend: Aviators are back for 2013.

The Marc Jacobs Double Bridge Metal Aviator Sunglasses sell for just under $300 and come in three dark, sexy colors. (Another trend: darker is better!)

These Italian-made modern frames feature, as their name implies, a double bridge bar detailed with the sleek MJ logo on the upper left lens.

3. Prada

Prada Designer Sunglasses

Italy understands sexy.

And their most famous designers understand sunglasses.

The Prada F Collection is a must-have for 2013.

These $330 signature sunglasses feature a wrap-around, streamlined shape with metal frames highlighted by the famous triangle crest logo at the temples for an urban-chic look.

You can buy these shades in a silver/grey combo, or a brass/shaded brown combo.

4. Roberto Cavalli Danubrite

Roberto Cavalli Designer Sunglasses

Another Italian designer brand on this list?

Ah, yes.

Another trend.

Roberto Cavalli’s oversized Danubrite squared sunglasses give a classy look with a contemporary personality.

The Roberto Cavalli logo rests on the temples of these dark specs.

For $277, you can’t beat this price.

5. Balenciaga

Balenciaga Designer Sunglasses

Warning: These are the most expensive sunglasses on this list of luxury.

These wire frames come in a classic gold tint.

While they pretend to be aviators, they offer a modern-shape with Balenciaga’s flagship temple accents.

Oh, yes.

The price.

These beauties will set you back $500, but is there really a price to put on luxury?

Which shades are you wearing to the beach this year?

The Most Exotic Destinations in the US

January 18th, 2013 - By

Most people Most Exotic Destinations in the United Statesthink that they have to travel to far-flung corners of the earth to really experience exotic locations.

Yes, some of the most desired destinations require a trans-ocean flight.

However, there is plenty of exotic excitement here in the US for people who know where to look.

Whether you are seeking a tropical paradise, utterly unique landscapes, international atmosphere or unusual culture, it is possible to find places that are close to home yet seem a world away from standard American vacation destinations.

Searching for something exotic close to home? Give these destinations a try…

Florida Keys

Luxury Vacation Rentals: Florida Keys

This chain of islands, hanging off the southern coast of Florida, are connected by a series of long bridges.

These subtropical destinations are best known for their beaches, and there are certainly plenty here.

But the Caribbean vibe makes the Keys more international than on the mainland.

Thanks to a number of world class SCUBA dive spots, artist colonies, and Main Streets with colorful buildings, the vacation expereinces here are very different from the mainland.

Santa Fe

Santa Fe has the distinction of being the oldest state capital in the US.

Its age is only one of its traits, however.

A world-class dining scene, a colorful and accessible history, unique high-desert scenery, and a high number of artists and musicians make it on of the most unique cities in the country.

Whether you are interested in hiking in unusual landscapes, appreciating Southwestern art or the ambiance of the historic main plaza, Santa Fe will certainly prove itself an exotic destination.

Santa Barbara

Sitting less than 100 miles outside of LA, this California destination is one of the most convenient destinations on this list.

Because of its Spanish colonial-style architecture and always-mild weather, Santa Barbara is known as the American Riviera.

Yes, it is a popular tourist destination that is on many people’s radar, and it sees plenty of weekend vacationers.

However, it is charming and unique enough to be an option for people seeking a vacation in a pleasant and atmospheric place.

Molokai

For anyone who lives in a cold-weather state, Hawaii’s islands probably seem equally ideal.

The island of Molokai, home to a former leper colony, has resisted the tourism development that characterizes the other islands.

It is delightfully undeveloped and the perfect place to experience an authentic Polynesian lifestyle.

Because of the dominance of natural landscapes here, even more than on the other islands, Molokai is a great place for outdoor adventure.

If your idea of “exotic” is hiking down steep trails to hidden beaches or wandering through fruit plantations, this is the destination for you.

Saint Augustine

Exotic Florida estate vacations

This Florida town sits only 30 minutes from Jacksonville, but seems a million miles away from the urban landscapes of Florida’s largest metro area.

Saint Augustine is filled with Old World ambiance and a romantic atmosphere.

Historic architecture plays a major role in Saint Augustine’s charm.

During the winter, the charming buildings are lit up with over a million lights, creating the kind of ambiance that one might expect from a vacation destination on the Italian Riviera or some equally exotic and historic place.

Olympic National Park

Private Estate Vacations in Washington

The northernmost rainforest in the US is found in Olympic National Park.

Lush jungles and rugged coastlines characterize this park, which sits on the Olympic Peninsula not far from the city of Seattle.

This is certainly not a place for a luxury resort vacation.

However, if you are an adventurer who wants to experience one of the most naturally-beautiful places in the US – with natural landscapes that are unlike anything else in the country – then Olympic National Park should be high on your to-visit list.

What US destinations do you consider exotic?  Let us know in the comments section below…

15 Luxury Travel Trends for 2013

January 15th, 2013 - By Andrew D.

2013 Luxury Travel TrendsA new year means new vacations.

Not the type of vacations from last year.

As experienced luxury travelers would say:

That’s so 2012.

This is 2013, and if the trends on this list pan out, you can expect a year filled with the most luxurious travel opportunities to date.

Here are some of the hot trends we’re following in 2013…

1) Luxury for the Young and Young at Heart

Luxury Travel Technology Trends

As the economy rebounds, we’ll start to see the younger generation of luxury travelers making their way to some of the world’s most sought-after destinations.

While these younger travelers are doing well for themselves — especially at such a young age — they’re also more tech-savvy, which gives them the opportunity to use the Internet to their advantage and find the best deals.

(Stay tuned for a similar trend on this list!)

This younger clientele shouldn’t scare off the veteran luxury travelers, however.

In fact, having more age diversity will actually enrich everyone’s experience — be it in India, on an exotic island in the Caribbean, or at the Milan Fashion Show.

2) Look for More Collaboration

Top Resorts of the World

The next time you book a room at that fancy, 5-start hotel in Chicago, you might receive a perk from the exquisite restaurant down the street.

More travel companies are teaming up to make the experiences they deliver even better.

The Ace Hotel in New York City is currently offering in-house suit services from a prestigious Brooklyn tailor.

The Lodge & Spa at the Cordillera in Beaver Creek, Colorado has teamed up with a local sleigh ride company down the hill from the hotel to give guests a winter wonderland experience, which is followed by an impressive dinner in a quaint cabin among the Rocky Mountains.

Collaboration is key for travelers this year.

3) Let’s Get Social

Social Media Travel

Are you tweeting about your experience?

Checking in at the restaurant you’re eating at on FourSquare or Yelp?

More luxury travelers are going to take advantage of fun social media experiences this year that not only let them brag to their followers where they are at, but also score a fun deal at the same time.

It’s not just about the major social networks, either.

Just like Starbucks offers free app downloads each day by giving out business cards with a promo code on the back, hotels might be including something similar that deals with the city you’re visiting.

Download that city-specific app for an even greater experience.

4) Theme-Centric Vacations

Luxury Vacations with a Theme

Long gone are the days where you simply show up and take in as much as you possibly can in a destination.

There is simply too much to see in some of these most sought-after destinations.

That’s why more luxury travelers are planning theme vacations.

Take a food tour of Spain, the country that features the most Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than any other around the globe.

Or how about an adventure vacation where you can bike halfway up a mountain in Northern California, followed by a rigorous hike to the top?

Don’t worry about your bikes — a mountain concierge service will have them cleaned and ready for you at the bottom.

Planning a theme vacation takes the stress out of traveling, because you’re not trying to squeeze in a hundred separate activities.

5) Event-focused vacations

Event Focused Vacations: 2013 Super Bowl New Orleans

Vacations just don’t have to be built around the idea of “getting away.”

Sometimes there’s an even better reason to relax for a week.

Maybe it’s attending the Super Bowl, and taking in all the pre-game activities a week before kickoff.

Or perhaps attend New York City’s Fashion Week and combine a day at the spa along with a fun makeover to make you look and feel like the ultimate fashionista.

Oh, and don’t forget to buy some new clothes on the luxurious Fifth Avenue.

6) Hyper-local is the New Authentic

Hyper Local Travel

Fans of luxury travel want that authentic experience, but for the past several years, they haven’t been looking in the right places.

If you’re looking for a truly authentic experience, visit the nooks and crannies of popular destinations.

Go out and rediscover some of the most beautiful inner-city villages.

If you’re in Europe and traveling to Berlin, don’t just check out the historic city.

Also travel to Mitte, which is similar to how Brooklyn relates to New York City.

In these villages, you can often find delightful boutique hotels and restaurants that are a city’s best-kept secret.

7) Skyscrape Your Luxury Travel Adventure

Skyscraper Travel

When you check in at your next hotel, don’t just accept any old room.

Request the room on the highest floor possible.

Most of the time, this means paying a little extra for an executive suite, or some equivalent, but the experience is stunning.

You’ll take in an amazing view of whichever city you’re visiting and beyond, and have a perfect opportunity for that family Holiday card photo.

Just remember to use some fill flash so you can see your family and the stunning cityscape in the background.

8) China is Still Calling

Luxury Travel China

It seems like China is on the bucket list for most luxury travel enthusiasts.

And why shouldn’t it be?

The country’s economy is booming, its food is absolutely delicious and you have plenty of exotic islands (Thailand, the Maldives, etc.) that help you extend your trip and make it more luxurious.

Bangkok is ultra-luxe and a must-see for 2013.

9) Quirky is in

Out of the box travel ideas

Business Insider recently released its 2013 luxury travel trends, and included a fun one at the end:

Quirkiness!

“Expect to see more hotels bringing the fun, from quirky staff uniforms to unusual features such as pinball machines in bedrooms, screening rooms, DIY Martini kits, cigar bar, pet treats, glam guest bikes and scooters for hire.”

Sure a pinball machine sounds crazy, but your kids will certainly like it.

And you shouldn’t be too annoyed by the dinging of the machine as you craft the perfect martini.

Mmmm!

10) Couch-Surfing

Couch Surfing

No, not that thing you did as a child.

This unique trend is staying in luxury apartments that you’ll never find on any popular travel website.

From a recent Reuters report:

“Couch-surfing is a hospitality revolution, thinks Robert Reid, travel editor for the Lonely Planet, one of the leading guides for consumers in a multi-billion dollar travel industry courted by almost every country on the globe.”

The idea is simple: People visit popular cities and find chic residential apartments to stay at for the week and live like a local.

Talk about authentic.

This will help court in the younger-generation of travelers, mainly because of the price.

A typical New York hotel room could cost $300 per night.

Stay in a luxury apartment in Brooklyn and you may only pay $100 for the night.

Plus you’ll have more space, a full-kitchen at your disposal and yes, even an opportunity to meet your neighbors for the week.

Oh, and parking won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

11) Outer-Space? Meh…

Space Travel

Let’s be straight: If you have $250,000 to $500,000 to blow and money is no object, then you need to call up Virgin Galactic and book a spot on their flight into outer space.

But you’e been warned!

While you’ll have bragging rights for a lifetime, you’re also going to spend a fortune for about 10 minutes outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.

But people are definitely interested.

It’s been said that the space tourism industry could hit $1.6 billion in revenue in its first decade.

12) Is it Time to Join a Luxury Travel Club?

Luxury Travel Clubs

If you know you’re going to travel — and travel a lot — it’s not a bad idea to consider a luxury travel club.

There are certainly plenty out there.

For the more affluent luxury traveler, you can join Exclusive Resorts.

If you’re looking for a more economical value, there’s Portico and Inspirato.

All of these clubs charge a one-time, up-front fee that give you access to their properties.

You then have to pay for your nights on top of that.

Exclusive Resorts charges about $1,100 per night, with most members choosing to travel 20-30 days per year.

That total amount is a member’s annual dues.

Portico and Inspirato allow you to book luxurious rooms and villas at a competitive rate that is only available to members.

13) The River Cruise is Cool Again

River Cruise Travel

The river cruise went through a period where it was designed for the “more seasoned” luxury traveler.

And I’m not talking about the 40-60 year-old age group.

Think older.

But today, the river cruise has evolved into a cultural experience that will appease all ages.

Since the river cruise — such as an experience down the Danube River, visiting all of the little villages along the way — are great for all ages, it might just be the perfect opportunity for a multigenerational family getaway.

14) Valuable Vacations

Sporting Vacation: 2013 Masters: Augusta National Golf Club

Luxury vacations aren’t about high-dollar amount experiences.

Luxury travelers want to see the value of their hard-earned dollars.

This could mean choosing a destination that your circle of friends or family have never visited before, or traveling to an event like The Masters golf tournament — a great idea for golf fans.

Remember, luxury travel is not about the money.

It’s about the experience.

15) Tasmania, Cambodia and Vietnam

South East Asia and Australia Travel

This list had to include some specific destinations, right?

Well, here are three that are a must-see this year.

Tasmania is Australia’s only island state an home to the adorable Tasmanian devil (adorable photo above).

Why is everyone raving about Cambodia?

Here’s what the New York Times says:

“From the forests of Laos to the beaches of Vietnam to the ruins of Cambodia, you can find we–conceived, well-out-fitted, well-run hotels that will sleep you in a style for hundreds of dollars a night.”

And Vietnam: We’ve been talking about this chic country for some time now.

The people are friendly, traditions remain vibrant and its history is unbelievably rich.

Travel this year, though.

As more people travel here, prices will continue to go up.

What are your luxury travel plans for 2013?

The Ultimate Guide to Luxury Ski Vacations

December 31st, 2012 - By Andrew D.

Luxury Ski VacationsAs the fall air transforms into an awakening winter breeze, luxury travelers start thinking of many winter past times.

Skiing, snowshoeing, hot cocoa in the lodge — certainly a massage is also in order.

And of course, you must look good doing it all.

A luxury ski vacation requires so much more than a pair of skis and a fancy SUV to take you up the mountain.

Here at Estates & Wedding Events we want to provide you with the Ultimate Guide to Luxury Ski Vacations.

Here’s a quick breakdown on how this guide will work:

• The Top 7 Ski Destinations

• Must-Have Ski Accessories for 2013

• Tipping 101: What’s Appropriate on the Mountain?

• Testimonials & Stories

Let’s get started…

The Top 7 Ski Destinations

You have plenty of amazing global options when it comes to choosing the locale of your next ski getaway.

Here are our 10 favorites to help make the decision-making process a bit easier.

1) Vail & Beaver Creek — Colorado

Luxury Vacations: Ski Colorado

When you think of skiing, Colorado has to be at the top of your list (and trust me, this won’t be the only Colorado destination mentioned here!).

Located two hours west of Denver in the Rocky Mountains, Vail and Beaver Creek offer classic elegance with modern amenities.

Both locations (they’re located about 15 minutes apart, but both offer shuttles that go back and forth throughout the day) have impressive ski lifts that are easy to reach from wherever you’re staying inside the respective village.

Vail, which recently celebrated its 50th birthday, has the stunning Arrabelle luxury resort, which literally surrounds Vail Village.

If you decide to stay in Beaver Creek, you can’t go wrong with the Ritz Carlton.

2) Lake Tahoe — California

Lake Tahoe Luxury Vacation Rentals

Site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, Northstar and Squaw Valley in beautiful Lake Tahoe is a skier and snowboarder’s paradise.

And if you’re looking for an amazing workout, try snowshoeing the many trails that weave in and out of the resorts.

When it comes to destinations, again, you can’t go wrong with the Ritz Carlton, but you might be intrigued to try out the Tahoe Mountain Club.

This rustic lodge offers plenty of options for children and a spa that is to die-for.

3) Telluride — Colorado

Telluride Luxury Vacations

Driving into Telluride is like teleporting into an old Western town.

Located in the San Juan Mountains, Telluride is rich with old Western history — especially when it comes to the mining industry.

The small-town feel offers plenty of luxurious amenities and some of the world’s best skiing.

And if you’re a cross-country skier, you’re in luck.

Telluride’s backcountry is a never-ending landscape of adventure.

Make sure to book a room at the Lumiére Telluride, the luxury hotel of this Colorado town.

This boutique hotel only has 11 rooms and 18 one- to four-bedroom residences — perfect for a family gathering.

4) Whistler — British Columbia, Canada

Whistler Vacation Rentals

Here’s another location where serious skiers and snowboarders can explore for a weeklong vacation.

The slopes appear to go on forever in Whistler, but the real adventure-seeker will want to mark off heli-skiing off their bucket list, as several companies in the area offer the heart-pounding adventure.

Where should you stay?

Look no further than the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

This resort offers ski-in/ski-out, the world’s greatest room service and if you’re in the mood to get married, there’s a lovely wedding chapel, too.

5) Stowe — Vermont

Stowe Vermont Vacation Rentals

The valley between Mount Mansfield and the Green Mountains is where you’ll find this gem of a destination.

Skiing on Stowe Mountain is a must, but no trip to Vermont is complete without a carriage ride through downtown and then onto some of the scenic trails.

Reserve a room at the Stowe Mountain Lodge and grab dinner at the Blue Moon Café — a local favorite that just celebrated 20 years of being in business.

6) Deer Valley, Utah

Deer Valley Utah Luxury Vacation Rentals

Located north of its rival Rocky Mountains is Flagstaff Mountain — the home of Deer Valley Resort — in Utah.

Forget skiing for just a moment and check out the Montage Deer Valley.

The Montage offers world-class amenities, including one of the best spas in the west, according to Condé Nast Traveler.

From the Montage’s website, the comfortable and relaxing, 600-square-foot rooms “offer rich estate-quality furnishings, commissioned artwork, comfortable sitting areas and gas fireplaces.”

7) Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole Wyoming Vacation Rentals

You may not think that seasoned travelers have Wyoming on their “must-visit” lists, but Jackson Hole is a diamond in the rough.

As previously mentioned here at Estates & Wedding Events, Jackson Hole is a beautiful spring and summer getaway, but come winter, it’s simply amazing.

Ski in the morning, shop in the afternoon, eat at exquisite restaurants, schedule a massage for the next morning and repeat.

Before you ski down the mountain, take in the view from the gondola that appears to be making its way up the heavens.

On your way down, hang on.

Many of the slopes here are suitable for beginners.

Must-Have Ski Accessories for 2013

Did Santa bring you everything you asked for this Christmas?

If not, don’t worry; there are plenty of must-have ski accessories for the New Year.

We’ll break this list down from the “stocking-stuffer” category to the “true luxury traveler” category.

Stocking-Stuffer Ski Accessories

This category features accessories $20 or less.

Buff Headwear

Luxury Travel Ski Accessories

A great ski accessory is a practical accessory.

Buff Headwear certainly qualifies under this notion.

At first glance, this $20 bandana looks just like that: A big bandana.

Upon further review, its functionality is astounding.

Wrap around your head anyway you desire.

It makes a great headband, full-face cover, scarf, pirate costume — you name it!

But after a run or two down the slopes, you’ll appreciate what it can really be used for:

A goggle wipe!

Wipe away the snow and slush and get ready for another trip down the mountain.

Powder Baskets

Ski Accessories: Luxury Travel

You’re bound to hit the slopes one day this ski season after a heavy snow.

The result?

Lots of powder that you can easily lose your poles in if you’re not careful.

That’s where Powder Baskets come into play.

These plastic, $7 ski pole accessories, simply slide onto your pole and hold in place, creating an extra barrier to prevent your poles from going too deep into the powder.

They’re little and cheap, but they are effective.

Make sure you bring a pole with you the next time you’re out looking for some powder baskets.

They won’t fit all poles, so you’ll need to do some work.

Luxury Travel Ski Accessories

This category features accessories a bit more on the pricier side.

Abs Vario Base Unit

A skier’s worst nightmare is an avalanche.

The Abs Vario Base Unit takes you out of that nightmare in a hurry.

The German-engineered and designed technology features twin air bags that inflate with a volume of 170 liters almost instantly when trouble is near.

All you do is a give a quick tug and you’ll be huge.

For almost $1,000, this might seem expensive, but if you’re a thrill-seeking skier, you never want to take any chances.

You get twin airbags for life from the company and an extensive emergency kit.

GoPro HD Hero2

Go Pro is the go-to (no pun intended) gadget for skiers who want to preserve their adventures in high definition.

What makes this $300 video camera so special is its ability to latch on to practically anything.

A popular choice is the helmet, giving your video the best possible first-person-point-of-view experience.

LifeProof iPhone Armband

Back in the day, skiers didn’t have to worry about bringing anything but their skis, poles and some warm winter gear with them up the mountain.

Today, you have your camera (and video camera) and smartphone.

And as pointed out on this blog, the iPhone tends to be the smartphone of choice for many people.

The LifeProof iPhone armband ($50) secures your iPhone and keeps it positioned when doing pretty much anything — including ski jumps — on the mountain.

The best part is that all of the buttons are accessible and easy to reach.

You can mount your iPhone face-in or face-out, with no worries about the display becoming scratched.

Throw on a pair of Bluetooth headphones and you’ll be set for the day.

Tipping 101: What’s Appropriate on the Mountain?

Luxury Travel Tipping Advice

Going out to eat is easy: 20 percent for good service and 15 percent for so-so service.

Many restaurants even write out the tip for you.

But what about our Ski Butlers?

What about the people that are taking your bags and skis when you walk into the resort?

Throw in all of these people and the little service perks you receive along the way, and tipping becomes a bit more complicated.

Here are some general rules of thumb when it comes to tipping on your next luxury ski vacation:

1) Carry plenty of $1 and $5 bills.

You don’t want to get caught with a wallet filled with $20s and $50s when a bellhop moves your bag from the lobby to your car.

That’s way too much.

2) Be aware of consistent service.

There will be some concierge people at the resort whom you’ll have daily interactions with.

A valet man, maybe a waitress.

Tip these people a couple of dollars each day — no more than $3.

At the end of your trip, if they’ve treated you well, give them $20-$30 to show your appreciation.

3) 20% for spa treatments.

Spa treatments are tricky — you’re already paying a lot of money for services, but 20 percent is standard for what is expected, in terms of tipping.

4) Doormen: Be cautious.

A doorman in the mountains isn’t like a doorman in New York City.

The doorman at the luxury ski resort is the arranger typically, not the doer.

He will call the valet driver, make your reservations, or have a rental car arranged.

This service is commendable, but no more than $5.

5) Bellman earn per bag.

If you’re on a luxury ski getaway, a bellman can earn some great tips, but he has a lot of work.

Typically, you’ll have three to five bags per person for a weeklong ski vacation.

This means 12 to 20 bags with a family of four.

If the bellman is bringing all those bags from the lobby to your room, you should give him $2 per bag, which means upwards to $40.

Simply shake his hand and hand him the tip once he’s done.

6) When do I tip the concierge?

The concierge in a ski resort can be a huge help.

From making reservations to finding some great entertainment for the night, your trip can be significantly better thanks to him or her.

But for the most part, you only talk to this person on the phone, and rarely in person.

If your concierge has done a suitable job for you throughout the week of your ski vacation, write a small note, and put it in an envelope with $30 to $50, depending on the level of service.

8) Front desk staff should rarely receive a tip

Because they’re paid more than the service-friendly occupations.

However, if they go out of their way, make a smart decision and reward appropriately.

7 Reasons Why Luxury Travel Will Pick Up This Year

December 21st, 2012 - By Andrew D.

Luxury Travel 20132012 brought us some hope.

The housing industry began to rebound, unemployment went down and there’s more confidence in the economy.

All of these things are great for the luxury traveler.

It means new destinations, more exciting excursions and plenty of memories.

In fact, luxury travel is expected to pick up this year.

Here’s what you can expect…

1) It’s been too long.

Luxury travel will pick up this year because we’ve essentially been stuck in this recession since late 2007.

Since then, many people stopped traveling — really, just spending money.

Times were tough, but now it’s time.

It’s time to enjoy life.

It’s time to enjoy travel.

It’s time to visit the world’s most sought-after destinations.

It’s time to bring generations of family together.

It’s time to bring your pet along.

Bad economies come in cycles, and we’re rolling out of this one.

It’s time to really travel.

2) Authenticity

Best Luxury Travel Destinations in 2013

Luxury travel will pick up this year because those affluent travelers have already done France.

They’ve done every exotic island.

They want a real experience on their vacation.

They want the cooking class with a local family in Myanmar.

They want to sip wine with Romans.

They want great grandma and the newly born great grandchild to smile for a photo in a Napa villa.

Because there are so many of these authentic vacations out there, luxury travel will flourish.

3) There’s so much to share

Luxury travel will pick up this year because travelers need more than a suitcase filled with clothes and some sunscreen.

They also need their technology.

According to the Cox & Kings trends report, more people will be vacationing, while glued to their smartphone — but in a good way.

There will be plenty of photos and videos to share.

Plenty of stories to blog about.

And countless Instagram photos.

Hashtag? #LuxuryTravel

4) Top travel destinations are calling your name

Top Travel Destinations in the World

Luxury travel will pick up this year because there are some amazing destinations waiting for you to explore.

Places like Southern India and Sri Lanka.

Places like Nepal and Bhutan.

Even places like Colombia and Botswana.

These are unexpected places, but places that have the potential to be the vacation of a lifetime.

5) We’re spending more money

Luxury travel will pick up this year because we have more money to spend.

More than 92 percent of Travel Leaders Group agents who surveyed clients found out that they will spend the same or more on travel in 2013.

While that’s up only 2 percent, it’s still up!

With the recession behind us, the luxury traveler has more confidence in spending a little extra.

6) Cruises are still amazing

Luxury Cruise Travel

And they’re a great deal in today’s market.

Luxury travel will pick up this year because of these fancy ships.

Cruises to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean are most popular, but river cruises are also a top choice of travelers.

Why the river cruise?

It’s more than just luxury.

It’s also history and culture, small towns and unique restaurants.

The cruise — either on ocean or on river — is a driving force behind luxury travel.

7) Because travel is life.

Working the 4o-hour work week grind isn’t what defines us.

We’re defined by the experiences on our vacations with the ones we love.

We’re defined by the first time our baby touches sand.

We’re defined by the marriage proposal with the perfect sunset in the background.

We’re defined by the moment our family watches an elephant while on safari.

Travel is our opportunity to unwind.

To relax.

To be ourselves.

Why will luxury travel pick up this year?

Because 2013 is going to be an incredible year.

Have a wonderful holiday season and an amazing New Year!

Luxury Pet Travel is the Next Big Trend

December 14th, 2012 - By Andrew D.

Pet TravelLove to travel, but hate leaving your best friend at home?

Air Royale International’s newest partnership with Sit ‘n Stay Global makes traveling with your pet not only easy, but also luxurious.

The next time you fly on one of the 5,000 jets owned by Air Royale, you’ll have the option to have Sit ‘n Stay flight attendants provide the best service for your dog or cat.

These flight attendants are American Red Cross’ Pet First Aid and CPR certified, and understand how to keep any animal under control, to ensure the safety of the flight.

“The focus at Sit ‘n Stay Global is to provide a supremely safe and satisfying experience for clients traveling with pets,” Carol Martin, CEO of Sit ‘n Stay Global said.

To ensure pets feel like luxurious, VIP guests, there is a FURst Class Service option available.

It sure beats being crated up in the plane’s cargo!

Is luxury pet travel becoming a trend?

It certainly seems so.

In March, TheJetSetPets.com premiered on the Web.

The website calls itself the “first and only one-stepp resource for luxury pet travel expertise.”

It offers everything from travel advice to the latest luxe accessories for your pets.

They also have a pretty active forum, where luxury pet owners can talk with other owners.

“It used to be extremely rate to see anyone else on an airplane or at a hotel with their pet,” said Kelly E. Carter, a former USA Today travel writer.

“Now it’s customary to see someone with their pet going through airport security or someone walking their dog through the lobby of a fancy hotel.”

Make sure to check out this site if you plan on bringing your pet along on your next luxury vacation.

Make sure your pet visits with your vet a week before (not any earlier!) before the trip.

A proper checkup will ensure that your pet is healthy enough for the big trip.

Make sure your vet provides you with a health certificate.

Some airplanes want to make sure your pet doesn’t have rabies, or any other kind of disease.

Be early at the airport.

Bringing a pet requires patience, and plenty of time.

Naturally, they’re going to be scared, so the more time they have to settle into wherever they’re traveling on the plane, the better.

Many people bring their pets in a nice carrier.

Make sure your pet is comfortable in that carrier.

Take them on car rides around town in it a month or two before your trip.

They won’t like it at first, but hopefully they’ll become more comfortable in it.

Label that carrier with a “Live Animal” sticker, to make sure your pet is carefully handled.

You probably think that feeding your pet before the flight is a good idea, but animal doctors recommend not feeing 4- to 6-hours before the trip.

A little bit of water is ok, and if you can, put a bowl with some ice cubes in it.

Don’t use a tranquilizer.

Some people think making their pet sleep through the experience is a good thing, but it’s not a safe option.

Have you taken your pet on an airplane?

Maybe to a luxurious resort?
