Taking Flight as a Newly Married Couple: Guide to Booking Your Honeymoon Air Travel

April 1st, 2013 - By

Booking honeymoon flight: Honeymoon Travel TipsJust over a week ago, my fiancé and I decided to take the plunge and book our honeymoon flight.

Considering that this purchase would have us crossing oceans, continents and seas, I knew that it wasn’t going to be easy.

On top of wedding planning and all of the stress that goes with it, the last aspect that you want to worry about is booking your honeymoon flight.

All of the other details of the honeymoon will fall into place, but the flight is crucial.

If you book a bad route, you could wind up in an unanticipated layover in a locale that says business meeting rather than honeymoon.

To ensure that flight is the most heavenly for a newly married couple, you will want to consider several elements before you click that purchase button.

Ready….lets jump in!

Limit Connections and Stops

Honeymoon Travel Tips: Limit Connections and Stops

For my honeymoon flight, the search results showed flight routes with stops in what seemed like every airport on the planet.

Getting to a Greek island is not the easiest feat to achieve all the way from Denver, Colorado.

Some flights featured up to five different stops just to get to Athens.

Considering that I fly a lot for work, I know just how exhausting these connections and stops can be.

The last thing that a newly married couple needs is a route littered with connections.

De-clutter your flight stops.

Your flight map should be uncomplicated and as simple as it can be.

It might cost you an extra $100, but you will arrive to your honeymoon less rundown.

Sometimes the cheapest flight is not a route that anyone would want to take.

For couples traveling to international destinations on long haul flights, a route with several connections can spell disaster.

If there is the slightest of delays, the entire trip can be thrown out of sync.

After the sheer exhaustion of the wedding, the last thing you should be worried about is just how many stops you will have to take.

Couples should select a relaxing route and eliminate unnecessary stops if there are direct flight options.

Avoid Those Too Tight Connections

Honeymoon Tips: Avoid Those Too Tight Connections

Any article of clothing that is too tight merely doesn’t work.

The same can be said for the honeymoon flight with connections that are simply too tight.

For my honeymoon flight, I knew that I would have to make a few stops.

Those few connecting flights that I have to make are spaced out with at least 2 hours in between flights.

You need to leave enough time for some sort of delay or any hiccups in the road.

If you are a bit of a daredevil and don’t mind a tight connection, your honeymoon is not the time to miss a flight.

If you miss a connection, you cannot get back those precious hours and days of your honeymoon.

A missed connection can also leave you in an airport that you didn’t foresee spending your honeymoon.

To top it off, you might be without your luggage if you missed the last flight of the day due to a tight connection.

Tight connections translate into stressful scenarios and mad dashes through the airport (you don’t want to feel like you are on the Amazing Race).

They can also result in the possibility of having your first fight as a married couple over the stresses of missed connections.

Research Your Airplane Type for Added Comfort and Amenities

Honeymoon Travel Tips: Research Your Airplane Type for Added Comfort and Amenities

You need to kick off your honeymoon flight as comfortable as possible.

While you might not be able to swing a seat in first class, you can increase your comfort level and flight amenities by doing a bit of research on the type of airplane.

Before you book your flight, you should do some digging around about the aircraft.

A little research will tell you how updated the plane may be and what amenities you will have.

For example, sites like Seat Guru allow you to search for the aircraft that you are considering flying.

It will tell you about audio, video, AC Power and food options on board.

You can also browse actual photographs of the plane from previous passengers to see how roomy it may be.

This research might sound a bit extensive, but it will be worth it for the honeymoon flight booking process.

If you are choosing between different airlines and routes, keep in mind that they might be different aircrafts with different features.

Some might have personalized entertainment screens while others will have those projector screens that induce a few neck cricks.

You can often maximize your comfort level on board in terms of amenities by merely going with the aircraft that gives you more for your money.

Select Your Seats with Assistance

Travel Tips: Select Your Seats with Assistance

Those same sites that can tell you about your aircraft amenities will also be useful when selecting a seat for your honeymoon flight.

Seat Guru also points out which seat is the best choice.

The site steers you away from those bad seats, ones with limited recline, near bathrooms or with giant metal boxes obstructing the legroom.

All of this information will help with your seat selection so that you don’t end up in a miserable place for a 10-hour flight.

In my case, the airline didn’t give seat assignments for our honeymoon flight.

If you are afraid that the airline might separate you from your new bride or groom, it is worth it to call the airline to see if they will give you a seat.

Depending on who picks up the phone on the other end, they might feel for you on your honeymoon and make certain that you are sitting together.

This is also beneficial for those couples leaving the day after their wedding.

In the confusion of the wedding, you probably aren’t thinking about checking in for your flight the next day.

If you don’t have a seat assignment and you don’t check in before coming to the airport, your options might be limited in terms of seating.

In a day and age of doing next to everything online, sometimes the best way to get what you need is to just pick up the phone and speak to a real person.

Set Up Flight Alerts if You Are Uncertain About Price Fluctuation

Honeymoon Travel Advice: Set Up Flight Alerts if You Are Uncertain About Price Fluctuation

Booking your honeymoon flight can be a guessing game for the couple on a budget.

The price of the ticket might be high so you gamble and wait.

It only goes up and up to the point where it is now out of reach.

You should have the honeymoon of your dreams and not compromise due to the airfare.

Once you find the flight that you want or the destination that you want, it is a good idea to set up a few airfare alerts on various travel search engines.

Some of these sites will even tell you if you should book now or wait depending on price reports and history.

Fare alerts are one of the best ways to save on your flight.

The minute that you are alerted that your  airfare is within reach, you can book it.

In the chaos of the wedding, you aren’t going to have the time to track the price fluctuation for your honeymoon flight.

You might as well have someone do that for you in order to score the best deal.

Honeymoon Registry 101: A Couple’s Guide to Registering for Their Dream Trip

March 11th, 2013 - By

Honeymoon Registry TipsWhen a couple begins registering for wedding gifts at home stores all across town, they might be given a scanner to merely tag what they want their guests to buy them.

However, the couple that already has salad spinners, mixers, cheese graters and other household items that would normally fill up a wedding registry might consider a different kind of  registry instead.

Honeymoon registries are not a new idea.

Many brides and grooms set up registries as a way to receive help with their dream trip, their first travels as husband and wife.

At the same time, this form of wedding registry is clearly not like the others.

You can’t scan “hot air balloon ride over Rome” or “car rental around South America” at a set store.

Instead, couples can set up honeymoon registries online for all of the honeymoon memories that they want from their guests.

It sounds simple enough, but there are a number of factors to consider when registering for a honeymoon.

Here are a few things to consider…

Know Your Honeymoon Registry Fees

Honeymoon Registries Ideas

Figuring out the costs and fees of many honeymoon registries can be just as difficult as deciding where to go on your honeymoon.

Before you register with a website, you need to know exactly what you are getting into and what you are getting your guests into in terms of fees.

Most popular honeymoon registries charge some sort of service fee to users, whether it is a price taken off the gift or a fee added to each gift.

You should ask each registry site what these fees cover.

You need to know what services you will get in return

While researching honeymoon registries for my own wedding, I found that these fees could greatly vary from site to site.

The service fees are also a bit of buried treasure on these websites.

You will need to dig around the FAQ pages of websites like the Big Day, The Honeymoon and Traveler’s Joy to find out what percentage of fees are added to honeymoon items.

Some are higher than others or vary depending on the value of the gift.

You don’t want your guests to feel cheated or gouged from your honeymoon registry due to their unreasonable fees.

Along the same lines, it is also important to consider how guests can pay.

Some appreciate being able to charge a gift by credit card, as they would with a regular wedding gift.

Others might want the option to just send money from their bank accounts.

Couples should make certain that payment could be made through a wealth of options for the comfort of their guests.

Decide if You Need Professional Travel Help to Create a Honeymoon Registry

Hire a travel agent to help with your honeymoon

As I plan my own honeymoon, I am quickly realizing why many couples implore the services of a travel agent for their honeymoon.

Depending on where you want to go, travel plans can be infinitely more complicated than you might think.

If you are planning a wedding and a major trip at the same time, you are going to need to delegate.

Some honeymoon registry sites even feature travel agent assistance as part of their registry services.

These travel experts can help you plan your trip and  decide just how to go about registering for these packages and plans.

Couples can even use the services of a travel agent to come up with activities and events for their honeymoon to add to their registry online.

You need to think about your trip a great deal before you add items to a registry that perhaps hundreds will be investing in for your wedding.

Personalize Your Wish List and Be Specific

Honeymoon Registry Guide Book

A wedding guest should still feel as though they are picking out a specific gift for you, even if you just register for a honeymoon.

Rather than just assigning cash quantities to general items like a plane ticket or luggage, you should be more specific so that the guest can feel more like they are picking out a set gift.

Some honeymoon registries make it possible to package your own gift to give to the happy couple.

You should give your guests the option to package together a portion of your trip, whether it is a specific hotel that you want to stay at or a restaurant you want to try at your destination.

A honeymoon registry is also a good time to tell your wedding guests all about your trip.

You need to get down to the specifics so that your guests will know what exactly they are contributing to in the end.

The registry service that you select should have a feature where you can provide details of your trip for those that view your honeymoon site.

The more detailed and personal you get, the more likely your guests will feel like they are a part of your trip.

Knowing the specifics of a honeymoon adds a personal touch, rather than merely just throwing $20 to a non-specified luggage set.

Understand How You Collect Those Gifts

Wedding Gifts for your Honeymoon

The fees for honeymoon registry websites can be a bit hard to find.

Information on how you receive your honeymoon contributions can also be buried in the company’s website.

Some sites like the Big Day and Traveler’s Joy make it possible to request payment at anytime for the gifts that you have received.

Other sites like The Honeymoon issue checks just days before the honeymoon.

This doesn’t always work for couples, especially with most travel plans requiring deposits months in advance.

To avoid a debt situation in the months building up to the wedding, couples should pay attention to how they get paid for these honeymoon gifts.

If you want to stagger the expenses of a honeymoon, it is best to seek out the registries that let you collect your honeymoon funds at any point in time.

Place Importance on Your Freedom to Book

Honeymoon travel ideas

Photo By travels of a monkey

One of the main reasons couples go with formal honeymoon registries is to maintain that freedom to book your travel with anyone.

If word spreads that you want guests to pay for your honeymoon plane ticket, you could have them gift miles for a certain airline.

However this places a limit on where the couple can book their plane ticket.

Travel is fraught with unknowns and variables.

You never know if your dates and plans may change or if you decide one hotel is not right for you.

A honeymoon registry should give you the freedom to book where you want and when you want.

Unless you know exactly what tour package you want or flight route, it is always best to keep flexible in your travel plans and registries.

Maintain and Customize  Thank You Notes

Planning for your honeymoon

Many honeymoon registries make the organization process a breeze.

They either tell you through email when a guest has purchased some item or they might just track your guests for you on the backend of the website.

Regardless, before you select a registry, make certain that it keeps your gifts and guests organized.

You would hate to forget that Uncle Larry bought you that wine tour in Tuscany when it comes time for thank you notes.

A special way to personalize those thank you notes once you return home from the honeymoon is to send a corresponding photograph of the activities, experiences, accommodations or travel gear given to you by the guest.

Again, you are connecting your guests with the experience, rather than just making it seem like they gave out money for a dream trip.

Photographs of you using or partaking in those gifts will provide a touching moment for your guests.

Final Thoughts…

Honeymoon travel tips & guide

Your kitchen has all of the garlic presses and waffle irons to last a lifetime.

Your home is fully outfitted with towels, sheets and pillows.

The couple that has it already can be a conundrum when it comes time to fill up a wedding registry.

After the chaos of the wedding, the honeymoon is always welcome for the newlyweds.

However, if you can’t afford to take the honeymoon of your dreams, you might as well ask your guests to send you.

Honeymoon registries aren’t as simple as just writing a check.

You need to know what you are getting into, what experience your guests will have and most importantly how you will make that dream honeymoon a reality.

Ireland Luxury Travel: Castles You Can Stay in Around the Emerald Isle

March 4th, 2013 - By

Best Ireland Castles: Dunguaire Castle, County Galway (credit: stahrdust3)

Imaginations of Ireland tend to conjure up visions of pots of gold, rainbows and mist-draped castles.

Actual visions of the country might not include a leprechaun and their overflowing pots of gold, but Ireland lives up to imaginations in the castle department.

For the traveler in search of refuge, many of those former Norman fortresses open up their doors and allow guests to sleep in their imaginations for the night.

The hundreds of years of history, the isolation and even a few ghost stories are all included in the room rate.

These Irish castles have transitioned from defensive strongholds to hospitable settings.

For a honeymoon in Ireland, a wedding venue or even just a luxurious getaway, travelers should consider resting up in these pieces of Irish history.

Ashford Castle

Ireland Castles: Ashford Castle

When you want to get away from the world, you might as well head to Ashford Castle on Ireland’s western edges.

Set up on over 350 acres of wooded parkland, the 13th century castle feels like it hasn’t been touched since its beginnings.

The Anglo-Norman De Burgo family founded the castle in 1228.

It would become their principal stronghold for a time until it changed hands and ultimately fell into the beer soaked fingers of Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness in 1852.

It wasn’t until 1939 that Ashford Castle would open up its doors to travelers in search of opulent shelter.

If Guinness is good for you, so too is the family’s former estate.

Ashford has that bubble surrounding it, one that seems impenetrable from chaos and harm.

With its backdrop of forests, lakes and mountains, guests check into the classic style rooms for the escapism.

Each room boasts its own touches, straying away from the cookie-cutter approach to most hotels.

Included in the room rate are the creaks of the floors and the chance to marvel at oil paintings that probably should be in museums.

Ashford Castle lends a number of activities for guests to take advantage on its grounds facing Lough Corrib.

You can play golf or shoot at clay pigeons.

Just beyond the castle’s grounds is the postcard perfect town of Cong.

The village was the setting for The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

The film almost single handedly opened up the floodgates of Americans to discover what Ireland was all about.

Ballygally Castle

Best Ireland Castles

The landscape up on Northern Ireland’s Antrim Coast is one of mist covered glens and causeways seemingly built by giants.

Resting up for the night in this setting comes with both history and legend.

Ballygally Castle positions on the scenic Antrim Coast.

The castle from 1625 gazes out on the sandy beaches of Ballygally Bay as it ponders its story.

James Shaw, a Scot looking for fortune in Ireland, constructed the now castle hotel.

Historians explain Ballygally Castle as a place of defense and residence in its early years.

It also functioned as a refuge for Protestants during civil wars.

By the 1950s, Ballygally Castle would transition into the role of hotel.

Renovated over the years, the castle features 44 bedrooms with a contemporary style.

However its older features are maintained throughout several turreted bedrooms.

If you prefer your luxury vacation to have a hint of legends and spirits, Ballygally Castle throws in the ghosts without an extra charge.

Shaw’s wife Isabella reportedly haunts the place, specifically in the appropriately named Ghost Room located in one of the oldest parts of the castle.

With ghost stories stretching across 400 years and its positioning on the tip of one of the world’s greatest road journeys, it is easy to see why hiding away in this Irish castle ticks all of the marks.

The setting compliments the spirit of the 17th century building.

Waterford Castle

Top Ireland Castles: Waterford Castle

The combination of both historic castle and island is incomparable.

Waterford Castle proudly positions on an estuary of the River Suir, just one mile down the river from Waterford City.

In order to reach this castle hotel, you must board the private ferry service between the city and the island.

Perhaps no other castle hotel in Ireland lends quite the level of seclusion for a vacation away than Waterford Castle.

The island’s life dates between the sixth and eight centuries when a monastic settlement was found on the grounds.

It would fall into the hands of the English Earl of Pembroke and cousin of Strongbow, Maurice Fitzgerald.

He would construct the first structure on the island, a Norman Keep.

Additions to the castle were made from 1849 to 1895.

Over the course of its time with the Fitzgerald family, the castle played host to a number of feasts and banquets.

By 1987, the Waterford Castle would turn into a luxury hotel.

The luxury hotel keeps things intimate with just 19 guest rooms.

Suites are decorated with antique furnishings, Waterford crystal lamps, four poster beds and even marble fireplaces in some cases.

Guests have 310 acres of private island to explore on any number of nature trails.

You can pack a picnic and spot the wildlife on the island, which includes badgers and deer.

It isn’t hard to envision a Fitzgerald resting up for the night in a neighboring room at the Waterford Castle.

The mix of history and seclusion lends an Irish experience that you won’t find available for a good night’s sleep in most cases.

Dromoland Castle

Incredible Irish Castles: Dromoland Castle

It’s not everyday that one has the chance to rest up in a former home of Irish royalty.

Dromoland Castle sounds fictitious in name and description but it is not a figment of the imagination.

The castle boasts a history dating back to the 5th century.

It was the ancestral home of the O’Briens, direct descendants of Brian Borun, High King of Ireland.

The O’Briens were one of the few native Gaelic families of royal blood.

Just 8 miles from Shannon Airport in County Clare, the estate presents itself in grand fashion with a meandering drive that approaches the grounds dramatically.

Hundreds of acres of magnificent lawns beckon the traveler in search of the Ireland of their imaginations.

Overlooking the golf course and sparkling lake, guests catch some ancient Zs throughout rooms decorated with old world elegance.

While all of the contemporary luxuries are readily available, you have the chance to play the part of an O’Brien by sleeping in the Queen Anne quadrangle of the hotel.

Sir Edward O’Brien built this section of 28 rooms in 1736.

The space of the castle prides itself on being a century older than the rest of five star hotels in Ireland.

Activities at Dromoland Castle range from hunting, fishing, horseback riding, golf, tennis and soaking up the spa.

Guests can also request fresh flowers, handmade chocolates and champagne to their rooms to truly feel like Irish royalty.

Dromoland Castle is famously known as one of Ireland’s best five star hotels.

Kinnitty Castle

Kinnitty Castle: Irelands best castles

By IrishFireside

Located in the village of Kinnitty in County Offaly in the Irish Midlands, Kinnitty Castle offers a taste of the 13th century.

Basking in the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Ireland’s Midlands, the castle has foundations in a 1213 Norman castle.

While destroyed in a fire in the 1920s, the castle was rebuilt in keeping with a neo gothic style.

Kinnitty Castle lords over 650 acres of parkland, lending a truly serene Irish castle experience.

The 37 guest rooms adorn in high ceilings, cast iron roll top baths and original features in keeping with the period of the property.

Guided historical tours of Kinnitty Castle are offered along with plenty of activities like fishing, clay pigeon shooting and walks.

Then again, Kinnitty Castle is just the sort of place where one might find relaxing by an open fire of which unquestionably can pass the day.

Worlds best castles: Ireland

The drive up to these castles is sure to cause mouths to drop in wonder.

A hotel could just be a hotel, but in Ireland, travelers in search of a little luxury will find a hotel can be a grand medieval castle, a standing testament to time.

And while a great deal is included in the room rate from antique covered rooms to classic activities that the former owners would probably appreciate, visions of leprechauns and pots of gold might cost extra.

Have you stayed in an Irish castle?

Honeymoon Island Hideaways: Secret European Sands to Seek out Post-Wedding Chaos

February 25th, 2013 - By

Top Honeymoon Destinations: Secrets & HideawaysGermany, Ireland, France, Italy and Greece could almost advertise as honeymoon destinations alone.

These European countries are no strangers to amorous couples looking to get away from the chaos of their weddings, and their families for that matter, for their honeymoons.

However just like a game of telephone, if one couple spends their honeymoon among the ruins of Rome or appreciating the sunsets of Santorini, the masses are bound to follow.

Being engrossed in the planning of my own wedding at the moment, I can see why many couples look forward to their wedding concluding and their honeymoon beginning.

A honeymoon offers the chance to get away from the details of engraved napkins and different shades of salmon.

You need to select a honeymoon location that eliminates all worries and stresses which is usually found poetically on islands.

However many honeymoon destinations are predictable and mainstream, especially in the European circuit.

If you and your partner want to begin your lives and travels together thinking a bit outside the box, you might want to plan your honeymoon to a secret island  for your own offbeat  hideaway.

From the shores of the Baltic Sea to the sands of the Mediterranean, a number of predictable honeymoon countries offer tiny islands that the world has forgotten or never even knew.

They might be in countries that you know, but these European island hideaways allow honeymooners to disconnect, even from fellow honeymooners.

Hiddensee Island, Germany

Honeymoon destinations: Hiddensee Island, Germany

A couple takes a seat in a strandkorb built for two.

The beach basket type chair blocks out the winds of the sea and keeps honeymooners close, as it should be.

And yet these couples sharing a wicker half-shell chair built for two are not in the Caribbean but rather Germany.

Island paradise and Germany aren’t often found in the same sentence.

However, Germany surprises with countless islands.

Honeymooners in search of seclusion and quiet will appreciate Hiddensee in the Baltic Sea.

Known by locals as “sweet little isle”, the island stretches just 19 square kilometers, making for pint sized honeymoon perfection.

Couples truly get away from the world as you can only travel by foot, bike or horse carriage on the island.

Without the noise of engines, you can appreciate Hiddensee’s undisturbed beachfront of white sand.

In addition, the island is a natural wonder as part of the Boddenlandschaft National Park.

It boasts lovely pine forests and a rich bird life among its rocky cliffs.

Hiddensee Island tugs at the heart strings of honeymooners with its meditative tranquility, a serenity that has attracted authors, poets and novelists to its shores.

Unspoiled nature and complete peace bode well not just for creative types but also for the couple just off of the whirlwind of a wedding.

And while you might not be toasting those classic honeymoon margaritas, you can imbibe in the local drink of the island, sea buckthorn schnapps.

Hiddensee grows sea buckthorn, a bushy scrub with orange berries that they somehow managed to make drinkable in schnapps form.

Lampedusa, Italy

Honeymoon hideaways: Lampedusa, Italy

Closer to Africa than any piece of Italy’s boot, the island of Lampedusa makes for an offbeat Italian honeymoon destination.

While lovers converge in Rome, Venice and Florence for their honeymoons, you will be truly away from a standard Italy experience in Lampedusa.

Italy’s southernmost island is in fact closer to Tunisia than Sicily.

The outdoorsy couple will appreciate this slice of Italian paradise for a large portion of the island is a protected nature reserve.

La Riserva Naturale litters in wooded areas and sandy coves, proving ideal for walks and hikes.

When you aren’t spending time combing the interior of the island, adventurous couples can take to the water.

Lampedusa has established a scuba diving reputation due to its crystal clear waters.

And for the truly rare honeymoon activity, couples who come to Lampedusa in July and August have the chance to see loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs on Spiaggia dei Conigli, otherwise known as Rabbit’s Beach.

The setting is one of the few places in the Mediterranean where you can see such a phenomenon.

Even if you can’t make it for the occasion, Spiaggia dei Conigli is worth seeking out while on Lampedusa’ shores.

The best-known spot on the island can only be reached by boat or during low tide.

The cove of rocky coastline and emerald waters could not be more honeymoon picture perfect.

Honeymooners looking to avoid the crowds can hire a boat or car and seek out Lampedusa’s lesser-known stretches of beach.

Achill Island, Ireland

Honeymoon locations: Achill Island, Ireland

For sun seekers and beachcombers, Ireland doesn’t usually serve as one of the best places to get a tan.

However this island nation is home to its own private island with a wealth of sandy beaches.

Achill Island floats only a short distance away from the mainland of Ireland.

Set up on the west coast of the country in County Mayo, a tiny road bridge from the Currane Peninsula connects Achill will the rest of the world.

While Ireland’s largest island, Achill provides that disconnection that every honeymooner requires without the headache of getting there.

Achill Island romanticizes couples with its very setting.

Couples should rent a car and make the narrow and at times nail biting drive around the island, known as Atlantic Drive.

Battling through the nerves will be worth it in the end to see dramatic overlooks of unbelievable greenery and pounding surf.

Hordes of sheep will often be your only company.

Achill is not all about the eye candy, but it also boasts a rich history and heritage.

Road signs spell out in the Irish language.

Megalithic tombs, forts, ruined watchtowers and medieval ghost towns litter the scene.

The island’s ending point produces a truly romantic setting.

Keem Beach perches on the tip of the island to the west.

The horseshoe shaped bay with more Caribbean inspired  waters causes couples to wonder just where they have landed.

In fact, Achill Island houses five Blue Flag beaches, perfect for sunbathing in the summer or wind-assisted activities like hang-gliding and windsurfing.

Couples should merely let the breeze of the Atlantic Ocean carry them to this off the beaten track island destination.

Simi, Greece

Honeymoon spots: Simi, Greece

The Greek island honeymoon usually boils down to a visit to one of its most popular 227 inhabited islands.

And while Santorini, Corfu and Mykonos are beautiful in their own right, the couple in search of an offbeat Greek island should head to the Dodecanese chain, specifically to the rugged and tiny Simi.

While just shy of the popular island of Rhodes, Simi is away from the tourist track in the southeastern Aegean.

The couple in search of a little cosmopolitan flair will find it on Simi.

When you arrive dramatically by boat, you will first notice the island’s rainbow of pastel colored neoclassical mansions.

Due to Simi’s rich tradition of shipbuilding and trading, its wealth is apparent from the wealth of grand mansions and churches.

Posing for photographs in this setting looks more like an untouched Greece than some of the other islands.

Simi’s appearance remains largely untouched by modern eyes, as an archaeological decree mandates buildings must maintain their historic grandeur.

Couples should also visit the remote and romantic Panormitis Monastery on Simi, dedicated to Saint Michael.

The couple looking to truly sizzle on their honeymoon will find the heat in Simi.

In fact, the island is one of the hottest places in Greece during the summertime.

Ile de Ré, France

Best honeymoon places: Ile de Ré, France

Connected to the French mainland by a bridge, Ile de Ré is what French island life should be.

Just 33 square miles, the small island sits just off of the coast of France, bathing in the Atlantic Ocean.

While most honeymooners envision a French honeymoon of scouring through mainland vineyards or soaking up the love of Paris, this honeymoon lends just enough isolation for those that still crave activity on their honeymoon.

Ile de Ré largely follows a slow and relaxed pace to life due to its main mode of transport.

Most go around the island by bike for over 60 miles of paved bike paths cover Ile de Ré.

You and your soul mate can pedal through sunflower fields and salt marshes or head down to the local baker for a baguette.

The scene is laughably French and yet merely how things are done on Ile de Ré.

Here you can have your cake and eat it too.

Couples looking to get away from it all can in places like Les Porte, the furthest village from the bridge connecting the island to France.

Wide, sandy beaches aren’t hard to come by on the island.

Then again, honeymooners that still enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life will find slices of the urban on Ile de Ré in resort corners like Saint Martin.

The historic port is just the sort of place one would want to park their yacht and stay awhile.

Throw in that Ile de Ré appreciates the same amount of sunshine as the south of France and this French island seems like a secret worth sharing.

February 19th, 2013 - By

Best Places in the US to get engaged

It is a moment of blurred bliss, of bundled nerves and utter surprise.

On bended knee and with ring in hand, eyes look up longingly and filled with hope.

Popping the question remains one of the few points in life where nerves crash harmoniously with joy.

While you can worry about the response on the other end of the proposal, the proposer can calm those nerves and perhaps sweeten the chances for a response of “yes” by selecting the perfect location for the engagement.

In the United States, you could pop the question in any number of iconic American sites from the very public proposals at sporting events to the less than appetizing restaurant meal with the ring baked into dessert.

Rather than going with a cliche proposal, the American engagement can come at any number of wondrous places, from the raw beauty of a national park to the top of the town.

National Parks

You could get down on one knee in any old landscape, but you probably won’t have the seclusion and natural wonder that one of the US National Parks lends.

While tromping through muddy hiking trails doesn’t always trigger romance, these spaces provide the backdrops for a proposal one would naturally never forget.

The country’s protected lands allow for private couples to find their stretch of wilderness away from prying eyes.

In fact, with 398 areas spanning over 84 million acres, the national park system offers plenty of room for engagement settings.

Just over an hour from Denver, couples can frolic through alpine glaciers and romp around wildflower meadows at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

Over in Arches National Park, proposals can take place in a landscape like no other of red, red rock.

Those who capture an engagement under one of the wondrous arches already have the most romantic engagement shot.

A couple can even go beyond the famous national parks of the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone.

Quirkier proposals can come in any number of protected landscapes, from the caves of Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky to the bubbling lava of Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park.

If you are out of ideas as to where to propose for a jaw-dropping natural setting, you need look no farther than your nearest national park.

Tops of This World

Wedding Proposal Locations

The song Climb Every Mountain in the Sound of Music appeals to those couples taking the plunge to get hitched.

Just as you can climb every mountain, search high and low and follow every path you know, as the sound mandates, you can do the same with your future fiancé.

The United States offers dozens of opportunities to climb to the highest points in town and make a top of this world proposal.

From the Willis Tower in Chicago to the classic Empire State Building in New York, the city slicker couple doesn’t mind scaling skyscrapers and stories to write their own tale.

Proposals are not just limited to manmade highpoints across the country.

From the Appalachian Mountains to the Sierra Nevadas, those on bended knee merely need to find the highest mountain within their proposal’s distance for a truly panoramic proposal location.

Historic Hotels of America

If you want to plan a romantic proposal in the US that takes a step back in time, you can find a whole laundry list of heritage properties for cozy retreats.

While the United States might lack the history of some countries, its hundreds of heritage hotels evoke a sense of place and the past for a weekend stay.

Used as the backdrop for love stories throughout the ages and frequented by everyone from presidents to actors, the Historic Hotels of America lend amorous circumstances for proposals.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation began its Historic Hotels of America program in 1989 in order to promote heritage tourism.

Its listings total over 200 hotels across the country that have kept up their historic integrity, architecture and ambiance.

In order to classify for this romantic list, the hotel must be at least 50 years old and either on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

With their crystal chandeliers and ghost stories, these properties across the United States hint at history with a night’s stay.

In Scottsdale, Arizona, you can rest up in the retro Hotel Valley Ho, also the site of Natalie Wood’s wedding.

Over in Louisville, Kentucky, proposals are turn of the century at the Brown Hotel, where spaces like the Crystal Ballroom and hotel lobby hark back to a different time.

Those fresh out of ideas as to where to get down on one knee can take a look at the Historic Hotels of America listing for a taste of the past on a romantic weekend away.

European Inspired Cities

European Inspired Proposal Locations

If you can’t have all of the love in Paris or the fountains of Rome to set the engagement tone, you might as well find their American impersonators.

The United States has its fair share of cities layered in grease and grime.

However a number of US cities practically fall out of European dreams.

The French settlement of New Orleans provides that old world, European feel for a proposal.

The Big Easy laced in wrought iron balconies and quiet streets where that ultimate question practically rolls off of the tongue.

Then there are other European-inspired cities like Charleston, South Carolina.

Its colorful kaleidoscope of manors and cobbled streets causes a few to do a double take as to whether they have jumped the pond eastward.

Some American cities perhaps accidentally mirror a few European capitals.

San Francisco compares notes with Lisbon, spread out across a series of hills, known for its rickety cable car rides and orange Golden Gate.

It might not be Lisbon’s yellow trams or even Ponte 25 de Abril, but it is a close contender for a worthy proposal spot with a suggestion of a more exotic European destination.

On the Water

Proposal Spots by the water

The United States enjoys a fine drink of water.

The glassy surface of rivers and lakes or the crashing of ocean waves is enough to induce a proposal.

The country borders a number of bodies of water, including the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and the Great Lakes.

Going near the water for an engagement is always easy in this country.

Those future and hopeful fiancés out of ideas for incorporating water into their American proposal can always take to the seas.

It is relatively easy to hire a sailboat, go on a day cruise, stroll through a city’s river walk area or simply find a stretch of sand with reservations for two.

Just be sure to hang on to that engagement ring near sand and water!

Do you have a great location for a U.S. proposal?

The Sexiest Sunglasses for Your Next Beach Vacation

January 25th, 2013 - By Andrew D.

Starting at the top and moving right: Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Roberto Cavalla and Balenciaga.

While a majority of the country wraps themselves up in fleece blankets near the fireplace, the avid luxury traveler is relaxing in the sand.

No matter if you’re in Florida, the Caribbean or Southern California, you want to relax and look good.

The latter requires some sexy shades.

Here are our picks for the sexiest sunglasses to take with you on that next luxurious beach vacation.

1. Gucci

Gucci Designer Sunglasses

Let’s get this list started with a bang.

When you think of luxury, you think of Gucci.

The Italian designer’s sunglasses for 2013 are certainly nothing to scoff at.

In fact, for just under $400, you might be getting a luxurious bargain.

The Gucci Butterfly Rimless Sunglasses take a page out of the aviators’ playbook, but with a hint of elegance: A small silver tone butterfly is perched on the corner of these cute shades.

Oh, and a pair of these sun blockers offer 100 percent UVA/UVB protection.

Choose from colors of a light blue/gradient blue; yellow/gradient brown; and gold/gradient black.

2. Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs Designer Sunglasses

These Marc Jacobs’ shades are showing us a trend: Aviators are back for 2013.

The Marc Jacobs Double Bridge Metal Aviator Sunglasses sell for just under $300 and come in three dark, sexy colors. (Another trend: darker is better!)

These Italian-made modern frames feature, as their name implies, a double bridge bar detailed with the sleek MJ logo on the upper left lens.

3. Prada

Prada Designer Sunglasses

Italy understands sexy.

And their most famous designers understand sunglasses.

The Prada F Collection is a must-have for 2013.

These $330 signature sunglasses feature a wrap-around, streamlined shape with metal frames highlighted by the famous triangle crest logo at the temples for an urban-chic look.

You can buy these shades in a silver/grey combo, or a brass/shaded brown combo.

4. Roberto Cavalli Danubrite

Roberto Cavalli Designer Sunglasses

Another Italian designer brand on this list?

Ah, yes.

Another trend.

Roberto Cavalli’s oversized Danubrite squared sunglasses give a classy look with a contemporary personality.

The Roberto Cavalli logo rests on the temples of these dark specs.

For $277, you can’t beat this price.

5. Balenciaga

Balenciaga Designer Sunglasses

Warning: These are the most expensive sunglasses on this list of luxury.

These wire frames come in a classic gold tint.

While they pretend to be aviators, they offer a modern-shape with Balenciaga’s flagship temple accents.

Oh, yes.

The price.

These beauties will set you back $500, but is there really a price to put on luxury?

Which shades are you wearing to the beach this year?

The Most Exotic Destinations in the US

January 18th, 2013 - By

Most people Most Exotic Destinations in the United Statesthink that they have to travel to far-flung corners of the earth to really experience exotic locations.

Yes, some of the most desired destinations require a trans-ocean flight.

However, there is plenty of exotic excitement here in the US for people who know where to look.

Whether you are seeking a tropical paradise, utterly unique landscapes, international atmosphere or unusual culture, it is possible to find places that are close to home yet seem a world away from standard American vacation destinations.

Searching for something exotic close to home? Give these destinations a try…

Florida Keys

Luxury Vacation Rentals: Florida Keys

This chain of islands, hanging off the southern coast of Florida, are connected by a series of long bridges.

These subtropical destinations are best known for their beaches, and there are certainly plenty here.

But the Caribbean vibe makes the Keys more international than on the mainland.

Thanks to a number of world class SCUBA dive spots, artist colonies, and Main Streets with colorful buildings, the vacation expereinces here are very different from the mainland.

Santa Fe

Luxury Estate vacation in the US Southwest

Santa Fe has the distinction of being the oldest state capital in the US.

Its age is only one of its traits, however.

A world-class dining scene, a colorful and accessible history, unique high-desert scenery, and a high number of artists and musicians make it on of the most unique cities in the country.

Whether you are interested in hiking in unusual landscapes, appreciating Southwestern art or the ambiance of the historic main plaza, Santa Fe will certainly prove itself an exotic destination.

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara Luxury Travel: Estate Vacation Rentals

Sitting less than 100 miles outside of LA, this California destination is one of the most convenient destinations on this list.

Because of its Spanish colonial-style architecture and always-mild weather, Santa Barbara is known as the American Riviera.

Yes, it is a popular tourist destination that is on many people’s radar, and it sees plenty of weekend vacationers.

However, it is charming and unique enough to be an option for people seeking a vacation in a pleasant and atmospheric place.

Molokai

Exotic vacation Molokai

For anyone who lives in a cold-weather state, Hawaii’s islands probably seem equally ideal.

The island of Molokai, home to a former leper colony, has resisted the tourism development that characterizes the other islands.

It is delightfully undeveloped and the perfect place to experience an authentic Polynesian lifestyle.

Because of the dominance of natural landscapes here, even more than on the other islands, Molokai is a great place for outdoor adventure.

If your idea of “exotic” is hiking down steep trails to hidden beaches or wandering through fruit plantations, this is the destination for you.

Saint Augustine

Exotic Florida estate vacations

This Florida town sits only 30 minutes from Jacksonville, but seems a million miles away from the urban landscapes of Florida’s largest metro area.

Saint Augustine is filled with Old World ambiance and a romantic atmosphere.

Historic architecture plays a major role in Saint Augustine’s charm.

During the winter, the charming buildings are lit up with over a million lights, creating the kind of ambiance that one might expect from a vacation destination on the Italian Riviera or some equally exotic and historic place.

Olympic National Park

The northernmost rainforest in the US is found in Olympic National Park.

Lush jungles and rugged coastlines characterize this park, which sits on the Olympic Peninsula not far from the city of Seattle.

This is certainly not a place for a luxury resort vacation.

However, if you are an adventurer who wants to experience one of the most naturally-beautiful places in the US – with natural landscapes that are unlike anything else in the country – then Olympic National Park should be high on your to-visit list.

What US destinations do you consider exotic?  Let us know in the comments section below…

15 Luxury Travel Trends for 2013

January 15th, 2013 - By Andrew D.

2013 Luxury Travel TrendsA new year means new vacations.

Not the type of vacations from last year.

As experienced luxury travelers would say:

That’s so 2012.

This is 2013, and if the trends on this list pan out, you can expect a year filled with the most luxurious travel opportunities to date.

Here are some of the hot trends we’re following in 2013…

1) Luxury for the Young and Young at Heart

Luxury Travel Technology Trends

As the economy rebounds, we’ll start to see the younger generation of luxury travelers making their way to some of the world’s most sought-after destinations.

While these younger travelers are doing well for themselves — especially at such a young age — they’re also more tech-savvy, which gives them the opportunity to use the Internet to their advantage and find the best deals.

(Stay tuned for a similar trend on this list!)

This younger clientele shouldn’t scare off the veteran luxury travelers, however.

In fact, having more age diversity will actually enrich everyone’s experience — be it in India, on an exotic island in the Caribbean, or at the Milan Fashion Show.

2) Look for More Collaboration

Top Resorts of the World

The next time you book a room at that fancy, 5-start hotel in Chicago, you might receive a perk from the exquisite restaurant down the street.

More travel companies are teaming up to make the experiences they deliver even better.

The Ace Hotel in New York City is currently offering in-house suit services from a prestigious Brooklyn tailor.

The Lodge & Spa at the Cordillera in Beaver Creek, Colorado has teamed up with a local sleigh ride company down the hill from the hotel to give guests a winter wonderland experience, which is followed by an impressive dinner in a quaint cabin among the Rocky Mountains.

Collaboration is key for travelers this year.

3) Let’s Get Social

Social Media Travel

Are you tweeting about your experience?

Checking in at the restaurant you’re eating at on FourSquare or Yelp?

More luxury travelers are going to take advantage of fun social media experiences this year that not only let them brag to their followers where they are at, but also score a fun deal at the same time.

It’s not just about the major social networks, either.

Just like Starbucks offers free app downloads each day by giving out business cards with a promo code on the back, hotels might be including something similar that deals with the city you’re visiting.

Download that city-specific app for an even greater experience.

4) Theme-Centric Vacations

Luxury Vacations with a Theme

Long gone are the days where you simply show up and take in as much as you possibly can in a destination.

There is simply too much to see in some of these most sought-after destinations.

That’s why more luxury travelers are planning theme vacations.

Take a food tour of Spain, the country that features the most Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than any other around the globe.

Or how about an adventure vacation where you can bike halfway up a mountain in Northern California, followed by a rigorous hike to the top?

Don’t worry about your bikes — a mountain concierge service will have them cleaned and ready for you at the bottom.

Planning a theme vacation takes the stress out of traveling, because you’re not trying to squeeze in a hundred separate activities.

5) Event-focused vacations

Event Focused Vacations: 2013 Super Bowl New Orleans

Vacations just don’t have to be built around the idea of “getting away.”

Sometimes there’s an even better reason to relax for a week.

Maybe it’s attending the Super Bowl, and taking in all the pre-game activities a week before kickoff.

Or perhaps attend New York City’s Fashion Week and combine a day at the spa along with a fun makeover to make you look and feel like the ultimate fashionista.

Oh, and don’t forget to buy some new clothes on the luxurious Fifth Avenue.

6) Hyper-local is the New Authentic

Hyper Local Travel

Fans of luxury travel want that authentic experience, but for the past several years, they haven’t been looking in the right places.

If you’re looking for a truly authentic experience, visit the nooks and crannies of popular destinations.

Go out and rediscover some of the most beautiful inner-city villages.

If you’re in Europe and traveling to Berlin, don’t just check out the historic city.

Also travel to Mitte, which is similar to how Brooklyn relates to New York City.

In these villages, you can often find delightful boutique hotels and restaurants that are a city’s best-kept secret.

7) Skyscrape Your Luxury Travel Adventure

Skyscraper Travel

When you check in at your next hotel, don’t just accept any old room.

Request the room on the highest floor possible.

Most of the time, this means paying a little extra for an executive suite, or some equivalent, but the experience is stunning.

You’ll take in an amazing view of whichever city you’re visiting and beyond, and have a perfect opportunity for that family Holiday card photo.

Just remember to use some fill flash so you can see your family and the stunning cityscape in the background.

8) China is Still Calling

Luxury Travel China

It seems like China is on the bucket list for most luxury travel enthusiasts.

And why shouldn’t it be?

The country’s economy is booming, its food is absolutely delicious and you have plenty of exotic islands (Thailand, the Maldives, etc.) that help you extend your trip and make it more luxurious.

Bangkok is ultra-luxe and a must-see for 2013.

9) Quirky is in

Out of the box travel ideas

Business Insider recently released its 2013 luxury travel trends, and included a fun one at the end:

Quirkiness!

“Expect to see more hotels bringing the fun, from quirky staff uniforms to unusual features such as pinball machines in bedrooms, screening rooms, DIY Martini kits, cigar bar, pet treats, glam guest bikes and scooters for hire.”

Sure a pinball machine sounds crazy, but your kids will certainly like it.

And you shouldn’t be too annoyed by the dinging of the machine as you craft the perfect martini.

Mmmm!

10) Couch-Surfing

Couch Surfing

No, not that thing you did as a child.

This unique trend is staying in luxury apartments that you’ll never find on any popular travel website.

From a recent Reuters report:

“Couch-surfing is a hospitality revolution, thinks Robert Reid, travel editor for the Lonely Planet, one of the leading guides for consumers in a multi-billion dollar travel industry courted by almost every country on the globe.”

The idea is simple: People visit popular cities and find chic residential apartments to stay at for the week and live like a local.

Talk about authentic.

This will help court in the younger-generation of travelers, mainly because of the price.

A typical New York hotel room could cost $300 per night.

Stay in a luxury apartment in Brooklyn and you may only pay $100 for the night.

Plus you’ll have more space, a full-kitchen at your disposal and yes, even an opportunity to meet your neighbors for the week.

Oh, and parking won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

11) Outer-Space? Meh…

Space Travel

Let’s be straight: If you have $250,000 to $500,000 to blow and money is no object, then you need to call up Virgin Galactic and book a spot on their flight into outer space.

But you’e been warned!

While you’ll have bragging rights for a lifetime, you’re also going to spend a fortune for about 10 minutes outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.

But people are definitely interested.

It’s been said that the space tourism industry could hit $1.6 billion in revenue in its first decade.

12) Is it Time to Join a Luxury Travel Club?

Luxury Travel Clubs

If you know you’re going to travel — and travel a lot — it’s not a bad idea to consider a luxury travel club.

There are certainly plenty out there.

For the more affluent luxury traveler, you can join Exclusive Resorts.

If you’re looking for a more economical value, there’s Portico and Inspirato.

All of these clubs charge a one-time, up-front fee that give you access to their properties.

You then have to pay for your nights on top of that.

Exclusive Resorts charges about $1,100 per night, with most members choosing to travel 20-30 days per year.

That total amount is a member’s annual dues.

Portico and Inspirato allow you to book luxurious rooms and villas at a competitive rate that is only available to members.

13) The River Cruise is Cool Again

River Cruise Travel

The river cruise went through a period where it was designed for the “more seasoned” luxury traveler.

And I’m not talking about the 40-60 year-old age group.

Think older.

But today, the river cruise has evolved into a cultural experience that will appease all ages.

Since the river cruise — such as an experience down the Danube River, visiting all of the little villages along the way — are great for all ages, it might just be the perfect opportunity for a multigenerational family getaway.

14) Valuable Vacations

Sporting Vacation: 2013 Masters: Augusta National Golf Club

Luxury vacations aren’t about high-dollar amount experiences.

Luxury travelers want to see the value of their hard-earned dollars.

This could mean choosing a destination that your circle of friends or family have never visited before, or traveling to an event like The Masters golf tournament — a great idea for golf fans.

Remember, luxury travel is not about the money.

It’s about the experience.

15) Tasmania, Cambodia and Vietnam

South East Asia and Australia Travel

This list had to include some specific destinations, right?

Well, here are three that are a must-see this year.

Tasmania is Australia’s only island state an home to the adorable Tasmanian devil (adorable photo above).

Why is everyone raving about Cambodia?

Here’s what the New York Times says:

“From the forests of Laos to the beaches of Vietnam to the ruins of Cambodia, you can find we–conceived, well-out-fitted, well-run hotels that will sleep you in a style for hundreds of dollars a night.”

And Vietnam: We’ve been talking about this chic country for some time now.

The people are friendly, traditions remain vibrant and its history is unbelievably rich.

Travel this year, though.

As more people travel here, prices will continue to go up.

What are your luxury travel plans for 2013?

The Ultimate Guide to Luxury Ski Vacations

December 31st, 2012 - By Andrew D.

Luxury Ski VacationsAs the fall air transforms into an awakening winter breeze, luxury travelers start thinking of many winter past times.

Skiing, snowshoeing, hot cocoa in the lodge — certainly a massage is also in order.

And of course, you must look good doing it all.

A luxury ski vacation requires so much more than a pair of skis and a fancy SUV to take you up the mountain.

Here at Estates & Wedding Events we want to provide you with the Ultimate Guide to Luxury Ski Vacations.

Here’s a quick breakdown on how this guide will work:

• The Top 7 Ski Destinations

• Must-Have Ski Accessories for 2013

• Tipping 101: What’s Appropriate on the Mountain?

• Testimonials & Stories

Let’s get started…

The Top 7 Ski Destinations

You have plenty of amazing global options when it comes to choosing the locale of your next ski getaway.

Here are our 10 favorites to help make the decision-making process a bit easier.

1) Vail & Beaver Creek — Colorado

Luxury Vacations: Ski Colorado

When you think of skiing, Colorado has to be at the top of your list (and trust me, this won’t be the only Colorado destination mentioned here!).

Located two hours west of Denver in the Rocky Mountains, Vail and Beaver Creek offer classic elegance with modern amenities.

Both locations (they’re located about 15 minutes apart, but both offer shuttles that go back and forth throughout the day) have impressive ski lifts that are easy to reach from wherever you’re staying inside the respective village.

Vail, which recently celebrated its 50th birthday, has the stunning Arrabelle luxury resort, which literally surrounds Vail Village.

If you decide to stay in Beaver Creek, you can’t go wrong with the Ritz Carlton.

2) Lake Tahoe — California

Lake Tahoe Luxury Vacation Rentals

Site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, Northstar and Squaw Valley in beautiful Lake Tahoe is a skier and snowboarder’s paradise.

And if you’re looking for an amazing workout, try snowshoeing the many trails that weave in and out of the resorts.

When it comes to destinations, again, you can’t go wrong with the Ritz Carlton, but you might be intrigued to try out the Tahoe Mountain Club.

This rustic lodge offers plenty of options for children and a spa that is to die-for.

3) Telluride — Colorado

Telluride Luxury Vacations

Driving into Telluride is like teleporting into an old Western town.

Located in the San Juan Mountains, Telluride is rich with old Western history — especially when it comes to the mining industry.

The small-town feel offers plenty of luxurious amenities and some of the world’s best skiing.

And if you’re a cross-country skier, you’re in luck.

Telluride’s backcountry is a never-ending landscape of adventure.

Make sure to book a room at the Lumiére Telluride, the luxury hotel of this Colorado town.

This boutique hotel only has 11 rooms and 18 one- to four-bedroom residences — perfect for a family gathering.

4) Whistler — British Columbia, Canada

Whistler Vacation Rentals

Here’s another location where serious skiers and snowboarders can explore for a weeklong vacation.

The slopes appear to go on forever in Whistler, but the real adventure-seeker will want to mark off heli-skiing off their bucket list, as several companies in the area offer the heart-pounding adventure.

Where should you stay?

Look no further than the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

This resort offers ski-in/ski-out, the world’s greatest room service and if you’re in the mood to get married, there’s a lovely wedding chapel, too.

5) Stowe — Vermont

Stowe Vermont Vacation Rentals

The valley between Mount Mansfield and the Green Mountains is where you’ll find this gem of a destination.

Skiing on Stowe Mountain is a must, but no trip to Vermont is complete without a carriage ride through downtown and then onto some of the scenic trails.

Reserve a room at the Stowe Mountain Lodge and grab dinner at the Blue Moon Café — a local favorite that just celebrated 20 years of being in business.

6) Deer Valley, Utah

Deer Valley Utah Luxury Vacation Rentals

Located north of its rival Rocky Mountains is Flagstaff Mountain — the home of Deer Valley Resort — in Utah.

Forget skiing for just a moment and check out the Montage Deer Valley.

The Montage offers world-class amenities, including one of the best spas in the west, according to Condé Nast Traveler.

From the Montage’s website, the comfortable and relaxing, 600-square-foot rooms “offer rich estate-quality furnishings, commissioned artwork, comfortable sitting areas and gas fireplaces.”

7) Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole Wyoming Vacation Rentals

You may not think that seasoned travelers have Wyoming on their “must-visit” lists, but Jackson Hole is a diamond in the rough.

As previously mentioned here at Estates & Wedding Events, Jackson Hole is a beautiful spring and summer getaway, but come winter, it’s simply amazing.

Ski in the morning, shop in the afternoon, eat at exquisite restaurants, schedule a massage for the next morning and repeat.

Before you ski down the mountain, take in the view from the gondola that appears to be making its way up the heavens.

On your way down, hang on.

Many of the slopes here are suitable for beginners.

Must-Have Ski Accessories for 2013

Did Santa bring you everything you asked for this Christmas?

If not, don’t worry; there are plenty of must-have ski accessories for the New Year.

We’ll break this list down from the “stocking-stuffer” category to the “true luxury traveler” category.

Stocking-Stuffer Ski Accessories

This category features accessories $20 or less.

Buff Headwear

Luxury Travel Ski Accessories

A great ski accessory is a practical accessory.

Buff Headwear certainly qualifies under this notion.

At first glance, this $20 bandana looks just like that: A big bandana.

Upon further review, its functionality is astounding.

Wrap around your head anyway you desire.

It makes a great headband, full-face cover, scarf, pirate costume — you name it!

But after a run or two down the slopes, you’ll appreciate what it can really be used for:

A goggle wipe!

Wipe away the snow and slush and get ready for another trip down the mountain.

Powder Baskets

Ski Accessories: Luxury Travel

You’re bound to hit the slopes one day this ski season after a heavy snow.

The result?

Lots of powder that you can easily lose your poles in if you’re not careful.

That’s where Powder Baskets come into play.

These plastic, $7 ski pole accessories, simply slide onto your pole and hold in place, creating an extra barrier to prevent your poles from going too deep into the powder.

They’re little and cheap, but they are effective.

Make sure you bring a pole with you the next time you’re out looking for some powder baskets.

They won’t fit all poles, so you’ll need to do some work.

Luxury Travel Ski Accessories

This category features accessories a bit more on the pricier side.

Abs Vario Base Unit

A skier’s worst nightmare is an avalanche.

The Abs Vario Base Unit takes you out of that nightmare in a hurry.

The German-engineered and designed technology features twin air bags that inflate with a volume of 170 liters almost instantly when trouble is near.

All you do is a give a quick tug and you’ll be huge.

For almost $1,000, this might seem expensive, but if you’re a thrill-seeking skier, you never want to take any chances.

You get twin airbags for life from the company and an extensive emergency kit.

GoPro HD Hero2

Go Pro is the go-to (no pun intended) gadget for skiers who want to preserve their adventures in high definition.

What makes this $300 video camera so special is its ability to latch on to practically anything.

A popular choice is the helmet, giving your video the best possible first-person-point-of-view experience.

LifeProof iPhone Armband

Back in the day, skiers didn’t have to worry about bringing anything but their skis, poles and some warm winter gear with them up the mountain.

Today, you have your camera (and video camera) and smartphone.

And as pointed out on this blog, the iPhone tends to be the smartphone of choice for many people.

The LifeProof iPhone armband ($50) secures your iPhone and keeps it positioned when doing pretty much anything — including ski jumps — on the mountain.

The best part is that all of the buttons are accessible and easy to reach.

You can mount your iPhone face-in or face-out, with no worries about the display becoming scratched.

Throw on a pair of Bluetooth headphones and you’ll be set for the day.

Tipping 101: What’s Appropriate on the Mountain?

Luxury Travel Tipping Advice

Going out to eat is easy: 20 percent for good service and 15 percent for so-so service.

Many restaurants even write out the tip for you.

But what about our Ski Butlers?

What about the people that are taking your bags and skis when you walk into the resort?

Throw in all of these people and the little service perks you receive along the way, and tipping becomes a bit more complicated.

Here are some general rules of thumb when it comes to tipping on your next luxury ski vacation:

1) Carry plenty of $1 and $5 bills.

You don’t want to get caught with a wallet filled with $20s and $50s when a bellhop moves your bag from the lobby to your car.

That’s way too much.

2) Be aware of consistent service.

There will be some concierge people at the resort whom you’ll have daily interactions with.

A valet man, maybe a waitress.

Tip these people a couple of dollars each day — no more than $3.

At the end of your trip, if they’ve treated you well, give them $20-$30 to show your appreciation.

3) 20% for spa treatments.

Spa treatments are tricky — you’re already paying a lot of money for services, but 20 percent is standard for what is expected, in terms of tipping.

4) Doormen: Be cautious.

A doorman in the mountains isn’t like a doorman in New York City.

The doorman at the luxury ski resort is the arranger typically, not the doer.

He will call the valet driver, make your reservations, or have a rental car arranged.

This service is commendable, but no more than $5.

5) Bellman earn per bag.

If you’re on a luxury ski getaway, a bellman can earn some great tips, but he has a lot of work.

Typically, you’ll have three to five bags per person for a weeklong ski vacation.

This means 12 to 20 bags with a family of four.

If the bellman is bringing all those bags from the lobby to your room, you should give him $2 per bag, which means upwards to $40.

Simply shake his hand and hand him the tip once he’s done.

6) When do I tip the concierge?

The concierge in a ski resort can be a huge help.

From making reservations to finding some great entertainment for the night, your trip can be significantly better thanks to him or her.

But for the most part, you only talk to this person on the phone, and rarely in person.

If your concierge has done a suitable job for you throughout the week of your ski vacation, write a small note, and put it in an envelope with $30 to $50, depending on the level of service.

8) Front desk staff should rarely receive a tip

Because they’re paid more than the service-friendly occupations.

However, if they go out of their way, make a smart decision and reward appropriately.

7 Reasons Why Luxury Travel Will Pick Up This Year

December 21st, 2012 - By Andrew D.

Luxury Travel 20132012 brought us some hope.

The housing industry began to rebound, unemployment went down and there’s more confidence in the economy.

All of these things are great for the luxury traveler.

It means new destinations, more exciting excursions and plenty of memories.

In fact, luxury travel is expected to pick up this year.

Here’s what you can expect…

1) It’s been too long.

Luxury travel will pick up this year because we’ve essentially been stuck in this recession since late 2007.

Since then, many people stopped traveling — really, just spending money.

Times were tough, but now it’s time.

It’s time to enjoy life.

It’s time to enjoy travel.

It’s time to visit the world’s most sought-after destinations.

It’s time to bring generations of family together.

It’s time to bring your pet along.

Bad economies come in cycles, and we’re rolling out of this one.

It’s time to really travel.

2) Authenticity

Best Luxury Travel Destinations in 2013

Luxury travel will pick up this year because those affluent travelers have already done France.

They’ve done every exotic island.

They want a real experience on their vacation.

They want the cooking class with a local family in Myanmar.

They want to sip wine with Romans.

They want great grandma and the newly born great grandchild to smile for a photo in a Napa villa.

Because there are so many of these authentic vacations out there, luxury travel will flourish.

3) There’s so much to share

Luxury travel will pick up this year because travelers need more than a suitcase filled with clothes and some sunscreen.

They also need their technology.

According to the Cox & Kings trends report, more people will be vacationing, while glued to their smartphone — but in a good way.

There will be plenty of photos and videos to share.

Plenty of stories to blog about.

And countless Instagram photos.

Hashtag? #LuxuryTravel

4) Top travel destinations are calling your name

Top Travel Destinations in the World

Luxury travel will pick up this year because there are some amazing destinations waiting for you to explore.

Places like Southern India and Sri Lanka.

Places like Nepal and Bhutan.

Even places like Colombia and Botswana.

These are unexpected places, but places that have the potential to be the vacation of a lifetime.

5) We’re spending more money

Luxury travel will pick up this year because we have more money to spend.

More than 92 percent of Travel Leaders Group agents who surveyed clients found out that they will spend the same or more on travel in 2013.

While that’s up only 2 percent, it’s still up!

With the recession behind us, the luxury traveler has more confidence in spending a little extra.

6) Cruises are still amazing

Luxury Cruise Travel

And they’re a great deal in today’s market.

Luxury travel will pick up this year because of these fancy ships.

Cruises to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean are most popular, but river cruises are also a top choice of travelers.

Why the river cruise?

It’s more than just luxury.

It’s also history and culture, small towns and unique restaurants.

The cruise — either on ocean or on river — is a driving force behind luxury travel.

7) Because travel is life.

Working the 4o-hour work week grind isn’t what defines us.

We’re defined by the experiences on our vacations with the ones we love.

We’re defined by the first time our baby touches sand.

We’re defined by the marriage proposal with the perfect sunset in the background.

We’re defined by the moment our family watches an elephant while on safari.

Travel is our opportunity to unwind.

To relax.

To be ourselves.

Why will luxury travel pick up this year?

Because 2013 is going to be an incredible year.

Have a wonderful holiday season and an amazing New Year!
