Earlier this month, TripAdvisor® released their Fourth Annual Vacation Rental survey results to reveal a growing trend of vacation go-ers interested in vacation rentals for overnight accommodations. In fact, the numbers showed nearly half of respondents (49 percent) have stayed or are planning to stay in a rental home in 2013, compared to last year’s 46% and 2011’2 40%.
Vacation planners are just catching on with discovering the exclusive amenities of a private home. The experience is luxuriously inimitable – like staying in a spotless mansion with 5-star hotel features without any one around to bother you! If you have never stayed at one, now is the chance.
Pinpointing and booking vacation homes has long been an under-the-radar or DIY travel method. This is why a service such as ours makes planning processes easier while we do all the weeding out for you. If you are still intimidated by the thought of staying in someone else’s home, here are some numbers on what past renters are doing across the world…

Vacation Rental or a Hotel?
Those who took the survey agreed that vacation rentals can be an excellent alternative to a hotel stay. Respondents cited the following factors as those most likely to sway them toward booking a vacation rental over a hotel:
– Savings (82 percent)
– Last-minute deals (82 percent)
– Traveling with a large group (19 percent)
– More living space (15 percent)
– Booking a trip for one week or longer (11 percent)
The survey further revealed that travelers are especially pleased with the unique offerings that vacation rentals often provide. Respondents said they like the following attributes best:
– Access to a full kitchen and/or laundry room (31 percent)
When it comes to dream vacations, respondents revealed a taste for the traditional, citing a beachfront villa (53 percent), mountain cabin (11 percent) and city apartment (10 percent) as the vacation rental types they’d most like to try. The more unique options of a private castle or private island appeared further down the list.
As for the luxury features often found in vacation rentals, travelers said a private beach would most tempt them to book:
Among survey respondents planning a rental stay this year, the most popular U.S. regions are the Southeast (33 percent), followed by the Southwest (16 percent) and the Northeast (12 percent). For travelers that are opting for a vacation rental stay outside the U.S., 62 percent will be vacationing in Europe, 25 percent in the Caribbean and 15 percent in Mexico.
In 2013, 37 percent of survey respondents say they plan to stay at a rental property for at least a week. Summer is the most popular vacation season, with 54 percent of travelers planning rental home stays between June and August, followed by 41 percent of respondents planning trips this fall (between September to November).
Being pampered at a hotel or boutique inn is always a treat, but there’s nothing like staying in a world renowned home all to yourself.
Do you have anything to share about past experiences in vacation rental homes?

Imaginations of Ireland tend to conjure up visions of pots of gold, rainbows and mist-draped castles.
Actual visions of the country might not include a leprechaun and their overflowing pots of gold, but Ireland lives up to imaginations in the castle department.
For the traveler in search of refuge, many of those former Norman fortresses open up their doors and allow guests to sleep in their imaginations for the night.
The hundreds of years of history, the isolation and even a few ghost stories are all included in the room rate.
These Irish castles have transitioned from defensive strongholds to hospitable settings.
For a honeymoon in Ireland, a wedding venue or even just a luxurious getaway, travelers should consider resting up in these pieces of Irish history.
Ashford Castle
When you want to get away from the world, you might as well head to Ashford Castle on Ireland’s western edges.
Set up on over 350 acres of wooded parkland, the 13th century castle feels like it hasn’t been touched since its beginnings.
The Anglo-Norman De Burgo family founded the castle in 1228.
It would become their principal stronghold for a time until it changed hands and ultimately fell into the beer soaked fingers of Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness in 1852.
It wasn’t until 1939 that Ashford Castle would open up its doors to travelers in search of opulent shelter.
If Guinness is good for you, so too is the family’s former estate.
Ashford has that bubble surrounding it, one that seems impenetrable from chaos and harm.
With its backdrop of forests, lakes and mountains, guests check into the classic style rooms for the escapism.
Just beyond the castle’s grounds is the postcard perfect town of Cong.
The village was the setting for The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.
The film almost single handedly opened up the floodgates of Americans to discover what Ireland was all about.
Ballygally Castle
The landscape up on Northern Ireland’s Antrim Coast is one of mist covered glens and causeways seemingly built by giants.
Resting up for the night in this setting comes with both history and legend.
Ballygally Castle positions on the scenic Antrim Coast.
The castle from 1625 gazes out on the sandy beaches of Ballygally Bay as it ponders its story.
James Shaw, a Scot looking for fortune in Ireland, constructed the now castle hotel.
Historians explain Ballygally Castle as a place of defense and residence in its early years.
It also functioned as a refuge for Protestants during civil wars.
By the 1950s, Ballygally Castle would transition into the role of hotel.
Renovated over the years, the castle features 44 bedrooms with a contemporary style.
However its older features are maintained throughout several turreted bedrooms.
If you prefer your luxury vacation to have a hint of legends and spirits, Ballygally Castle throws in the ghosts without an extra charge.
Shaw’s wife Isabella reportedly haunts the place, specifically in the appropriately named Ghost Room located in one of the oldest parts of the castle.
With ghost stories stretching across 400 years and its positioning on the tip of one of the world’s greatest road journeys, it is easy to see why hiding away in this Irish castle ticks all of the marks.
The setting compliments the spirit of the 17th century building.
Waterford Castle
Photo By Matt and Kim Rudge
The combination of both historic castle and island is incomparable.
Waterford Castle proudly positions on an estuary of the River Suir, just one mile down the river from Waterford City.
In order to reach this castle hotel, you must board the private ferry service between the city and the island.
Perhaps no other castle hotel in Ireland lends quite the level of seclusion for a vacation away than Waterford Castle.
The island’s life dates between the sixth and eight centuries when a monastic settlement was found on the grounds.
It would fall into the hands of the English Earl of Pembroke and cousin of Strongbow, Maurice Fitzgerald.
He would construct the first structure on the island, a Norman Keep.
Additions to the castle were made from 1849 to 1895.
Over the course of its time with the Fitzgerald family, the castle played host to a number of feasts and banquets.
By 1987, the Waterford Castle would turn into a luxury hotel.
The luxury hotel keeps things intimate with just 19 guest rooms.
Suites are decorated with antique furnishings, Waterford crystal lamps, four poster beds and even marble fireplaces in some cases.
Guests have 310 acres of private island to explore on any number of nature trails.
You can pack a picnic and spot the wildlife on the island, which includes badgers and deer.
It isn’t hard to envision a Fitzgerald resting up for the night in a neighboring room at the Waterford Castle.
The mix of history and seclusion lends an Irish experience that you won’t find available for a good night’s sleep in most cases.
Dromoland Castle
It’s not everyday that one has the chance to rest up in a former home of Irish royalty.
Dromoland Castle sounds fictitious in name and description but it is not a figment of the imagination.
The castle boasts a history dating back to the 5th century.
It was the ancestral home of the O’Briens, direct descendants of Brian Borun, High King of Ireland.
The O’Briens were one of the few native Gaelic families of royal blood.
Just 8 miles from Shannon Airport in County Clare, the estate presents itself in grand fashion with a meandering drive that approaches the grounds dramatically.
Hundreds of acres of magnificent lawns beckon the traveler in search of the Ireland of their imaginations.
Overlooking the golf course and sparkling lake, guests catch some ancient Zs throughout rooms decorated with old world elegance.
While all of the contemporary luxuries are readily available, you have the chance to play the part of an O’Brien by sleeping in the Queen Anne quadrangle of the hotel.
Sir Edward O’Brien built this section of 28 rooms in 1736.
The space of the castle prides itself on being a century older than the rest of five star hotels in Ireland.
Activities at Dromoland Castle range from hunting, fishing, horseback riding, golf, tennis and soaking up the spa.
Guests can also request fresh flowers, handmade chocolates and champagne to their rooms to truly feel like Irish royalty.
Dromoland Castle is famously known as one of Ireland’s best five star hotels.
Kinnitty Castle
By IrishFireside
Located in the village of Kinnitty in County Offaly in the Irish Midlands, Kinnitty Castle offers a taste of the 13th century.
Basking in the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Ireland’s Midlands, the castle has foundations in a 1213 Norman castle.
While destroyed in a fire in the 1920s, the castle was rebuilt in keeping with a neo gothic style.
Kinnitty Castle lords over 650 acres of parkland, lending a truly serene Irish castle experience.
The 37 guest rooms adorn in high ceilings, cast iron roll top baths and original features in keeping with the period of the property.
Guided historical tours of Kinnitty Castle are offered along with plenty of activities like fishing, clay pigeon shooting and walks.
Then again, Kinnitty Castle is just the sort of place where one might find relaxing by an open fire of which unquestionably can pass the day.
The drive up to these castles is sure to cause mouths to drop in wonder.
A hotel could just be a hotel, but in Ireland, travelers in search of a little luxury will find a hotel can be a grand medieval castle, a standing testament to time.
And while a great deal is included in the room rate from antique covered rooms to classic activities that the former owners would probably appreciate, visions of leprechauns and pots of gold might cost extra.
Have you stayed in an Irish castle?

Germany, Ireland, France, Italy and Greece could almost advertise as honeymoon destinations alone.
These European countries are no strangers to amorous couples looking to get away from the chaos of their weddings, and their families for that matter, for their honeymoons.
However just like a game of telephone, if one couple spends their honeymoon among the ruins of Rome or appreciating the sunsets of Santorini, the masses are bound to follow.
Being engrossed in the planning of my own wedding at the moment, I can see why many couples look forward to their wedding concluding and their honeymoon beginning.
A honeymoon offers the chance to get away from the details of engraved napkins and different shades of salmon.
You need to select a honeymoon location that eliminates all worries and stresses which is usually found poetically on islands.
However many honeymoon destinations are predictable and mainstream, especially in the European circuit.
If you and your partner want to begin your lives and travels together thinking a bit outside the box, you might want to plan your honeymoon to a secret island for your own offbeat hideaway.
From the shores of the Baltic Sea to the sands of the Mediterranean, a number of predictable honeymoon countries offer tiny islands that the world has forgotten or never even knew.
They might be in countries that you know, but these European island hideaways allow honeymooners to disconnect, even from fellow honeymooners.
Hiddensee Island, Germany
A couple takes a seat in a strandkorb built for two.
The beach basket type chair blocks out the winds of the sea and keeps honeymooners close, as it should be.
And yet these couples sharing a wicker half-shell chair built for two are not in the Caribbean but rather Germany.
Island paradise and Germany aren’t often found in the same sentence.
However, Germany surprises with countless islands.
Honeymooners in search of seclusion and quiet will appreciate Hiddensee in the Baltic Sea.
Known by locals as “sweet little isle”, the island stretches just 19 square kilometers, making for pint sized honeymoon perfection.
Couples truly get away from the world as you can only travel by foot, bike or horse carriage on the island.
Without the noise of engines, you can appreciate Hiddensee’s undisturbed beachfront of white sand.
In addition, the island is a natural wonder as part of the Boddenlandschaft National Park.
It boasts lovely pine forests and a rich bird life among its rocky cliffs.
Hiddensee Island tugs at the heart strings of honeymooners with its meditative tranquility, a serenity that has attracted authors, poets and novelists to its shores.
Unspoiled nature and complete peace bode well not just for creative types but also for the couple just off of the whirlwind of a wedding.
And while you might not be toasting those classic honeymoon margaritas, you can imbibe in the local drink of the island, sea buckthorn schnapps.
Hiddensee grows sea buckthorn, a bushy scrub with orange berries that they somehow managed to make drinkable in schnapps form.
Lampedusa, Italy
Closer to Africa than any piece of Italy’s boot, the island of Lampedusa makes for an offbeat Italian honeymoon destination.
While lovers converge in Rome, Venice and Florence for their honeymoons, you will be truly away from a standard Italy experience in Lampedusa.
Italy’s southernmost island is in fact closer to Tunisia than Sicily.
The outdoorsy couple will appreciate this slice of Italian paradise for a large portion of the island is a protected nature reserve.
La Riserva Naturale litters in wooded areas and sandy coves, proving ideal for walks and hikes.
When you aren’t spending time combing the interior of the island, adventurous couples can take to the water.
Lampedusa has established a scuba diving reputation due to its crystal clear waters.
And for the truly rare honeymoon activity, couples who come to Lampedusa in July and August have the chance to see loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs on Spiaggia dei Conigli, otherwise known as Rabbit’s Beach.
The setting is one of the few places in the Mediterranean where you can see such a phenomenon.
Even if you can’t make it for the occasion, Spiaggia dei Conigli is worth seeking out while on Lampedusa’ shores.
The best-known spot on the island can only be reached by boat or during low tide.
The cove of rocky coastline and emerald waters could not be more honeymoon picture perfect.
Honeymooners looking to avoid the crowds can hire a boat or car and seek out Lampedusa’s lesser-known stretches of beach.
Achill Island, Ireland
For sun seekers and beachcombers, Ireland doesn’t usually serve as one of the best places to get a tan.
However this island nation is home to its own private island with a wealth of sandy beaches.
Achill Island floats only a short distance away from the mainland of Ireland.
Set up on the west coast of the country in County Mayo, a tiny road bridge from the Currane Peninsula connects Achill will the rest of the world.
While Ireland’s largest island, Achill provides that disconnection that every honeymooner requires without the headache of getting there.
Achill Island romanticizes couples with its very setting.
Couples should rent a car and make the narrow and at times nail biting drive around the island, known as Atlantic Drive.
Battling through the nerves will be worth it in the end to see dramatic overlooks of unbelievable greenery and pounding surf.
Hordes of sheep will often be your only company.
Achill is not all about the eye candy, but it also boasts a rich history and heritage.
Road signs spell out in the Irish language.
Megalithic tombs, forts, ruined watchtowers and medieval ghost towns litter the scene.
The island’s ending point produces a truly romantic setting.
Keem Beach perches on the tip of the island to the west.
The horseshoe shaped bay with more Caribbean inspired waters causes couples to wonder just where they have landed.
In fact, Achill Island houses five Blue Flag beaches, perfect for sunbathing in the summer or wind-assisted activities like hang-gliding and windsurfing.
Couples should merely let the breeze of the Atlantic Ocean carry them to this off the beaten track island destination.
Simi, Greece
The Greek island honeymoon usually boils down to a visit to one of its most popular 227 inhabited islands.
And while Santorini, Corfu and Mykonos are beautiful in their own right, the couple in search of an offbeat Greek island should head to the Dodecanese chain, specifically to the rugged and tiny Simi.
While just shy of the popular island of Rhodes, Simi is away from the tourist track in the southeastern Aegean.
The couple in search of a little cosmopolitan flair will find it on Simi.
When you arrive dramatically by boat, you will first notice the island’s rainbow of pastel colored neoclassical mansions.
Due to Simi’s rich tradition of shipbuilding and trading, its wealth is apparent from the wealth of grand mansions and churches.
Posing for photographs in this setting looks more like an untouched Greece than some of the other islands.
Simi’s appearance remains largely untouched by modern eyes, as an archaeological decree mandates buildings must maintain their historic grandeur.
Couples should also visit the remote and romantic Panormitis Monastery on Simi, dedicated to Saint Michael.
The couple looking to truly sizzle on their honeymoon will find the heat in Simi.
In fact, the island is one of the hottest places in Greece during the summertime.
Ile de Ré, France
Connected to the French mainland by a bridge, Ile de Ré is what French island life should be.
Just 33 square miles, the small island sits just off of the coast of France, bathing in the Atlantic Ocean.
While most honeymooners envision a French honeymoon of scouring through mainland vineyards or soaking up the love of Paris, this honeymoon lends just enough isolation for those that still crave activity on their honeymoon.
Ile de Ré largely follows a slow and relaxed pace to life due to its main mode of transport.
Most go around the island by bike for over 60 miles of paved bike paths cover Ile de Ré.
You and your soul mate can pedal through sunflower fields and salt marshes or head down to the local baker for a baguette.
The scene is laughably French and yet merely how things are done on Ile de Ré.
Here you can have your cake and eat it too.
Couples looking to get away from it all can in places like Les Porte, the furthest village from the bridge connecting the island to France.
Wide, sandy beaches aren’t hard to come by on the island.
Then again, honeymooners that still enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life will find slices of the urban on Ile de Ré in resort corners like Saint Martin.
The historic port is just the sort of place one would want to park their yacht and stay awhile.
Throw in that Ile de Ré appreciates the same amount of sunshine as the south of France and this French island seems like a secret worth sharing.

This is 2013, and if the trends on this list pan out, you can expect a year filled with the most luxurious travel opportunities to date.
Here are some of the hot trends we’re following in 2013…
1) Luxury for the Young and Young at Heart
As the economy rebounds, we’ll start to see the younger generation of luxury travelers making their way to some of the world’s most sought-after destinations.
While these younger travelers are doing well for themselves — especially at such a young age — they’re also more tech-savvy, which gives them the opportunity to use the Internet to their advantage and find the best deals.
(Stay tuned for a similar trend on this list!)
This younger clientele shouldn’t scare off the veteran luxury travelers, however.
In fact, having more age diversity will actually enrich everyone’s experience — be it in India, on an exotic island in the Caribbean, or at the Milan Fashion Show.
2) Look for More Collaboration
The next time you book a room at that fancy, 5-start hotel in Chicago, you might receive a perk from the exquisite restaurant down the street.
More travel companies are teaming up to make the experiences they deliver even better.
The Ace Hotel in New York City is currently offering in-house suit services from a prestigious Brooklyn tailor.
The Lodge & Spa at the Cordillera in Beaver Creek, Colorado has teamed up with a local sleigh ride company down the hill from the hotel to give guests a winter wonderland experience, which is followed by an impressive dinner in a quaint cabin among the Rocky Mountains.
Collaboration is key for travelers this year.
3) Let’s Get Social
Are you tweeting about your experience?
Checking in at the restaurant you’re eating at on FourSquare or Yelp?
More luxury travelers are going to take advantage of fun social media experiences this year that not only let them brag to their followers where they are at, but also score a fun deal at the same time.
It’s not just about the major social networks, either.
Just like Starbucks offers free app downloads each day by giving out business cards with a promo code on the back, hotels might be including something similar that deals with the city you’re visiting.
Download that city-specific app for an even greater experience.
4) Theme-Centric Vacations
Long gone are the days where you simply show up and take in as much as you possibly can in a destination.
There is simply too much to see in some of these most sought-after destinations.
That’s why more luxury travelers are planning theme vacations.
Take a food tour of Spain, the country that features the most Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than any other around the globe.
Or how about an adventure vacation where you can bike halfway up a mountain in Northern California, followed by a rigorous hike to the top?
Don’t worry about your bikes — a mountain concierge service will have them cleaned and ready for you at the bottom.
Planning a theme vacation takes the stress out of traveling, because you’re not trying to squeeze in a hundred separate activities.
5) Event-focused vacations
Vacations just don’t have to be built around the idea of “getting away.”
Sometimes there’s an even better reason to relax for a week.
Maybe it’s attending the Super Bowl, and taking in all the pre-game activities a week before kickoff.
Or perhaps attend New York City’s Fashion Week and combine a day at the spa along with a fun makeover to make you look and feel like the ultimate fashionista.
Oh, and don’t forget to buy some new clothes on the luxurious Fifth Avenue.
6) Hyper-local is the New Authentic
Fans of luxury travel want that authentic experience, but for the past several years, they haven’t been looking in the right places.
If you’re looking for a truly authentic experience, visit the nooks and crannies of popular destinations.
Go out and rediscover some of the most beautiful inner-city villages.
If you’re in Europe and traveling to Berlin, don’t just check out the historic city.
Also travel to Mitte, which is similar to how Brooklyn relates to New York City.
In these villages, you can often find delightful boutique hotels and restaurants that are a city’s best-kept secret.
7) Skyscrape Your Luxury Travel Adventure
When you check in at your next hotel, don’t just accept any old room.
Request the room on the highest floor possible.
Most of the time, this means paying a little extra for an executive suite, or some equivalent, but the experience is stunning.
You’ll take in an amazing view of whichever city you’re visiting and beyond, and have a perfect opportunity for that family Holiday card photo.
Just remember to use some fill flash so you can see your family and the stunning cityscape in the background.
8) China is Still Calling
It seems like China is on the bucket list for most luxury travel enthusiasts.
And why shouldn’t it be?
The country’s economy is booming, its food is absolutely delicious and you have plenty of exotic islands (Thailand, the Maldives, etc.) that help you extend your trip and make it more luxurious.
Bangkok is ultra-luxe and a must-see for 2013.
9) Quirky is in
Business Insider recently released its 2013 luxury travel trends, and included a fun one at the end:
Quirkiness!
“Expect to see more hotels bringing the fun, from quirky staff uniforms to unusual features such as pinball machines in bedrooms, screening rooms, DIY Martini kits, cigar bar, pet treats, glam guest bikes and scooters for hire.”
Sure a pinball machine sounds crazy, but your kids will certainly like it.
And you shouldn’t be too annoyed by the dinging of the machine as you craft the perfect martini.
Mmmm!
10) Couch-Surfing
No, not that thing you did as a child.
This unique trend is staying in luxury apartments that you’ll never find on any popular travel website.
“Couch-surfing is a hospitality revolution, thinks Robert Reid, travel editor for the Lonely Planet, one of the leading guides for consumers in a multi-billion dollar travel industry courted by almost every country on the globe.”
The idea is simple: People visit popular cities and find chic residential apartments to stay at for the week and live like a local.
Talk about authentic.
This will help court in the younger-generation of travelers, mainly because of the price.
A typical New York hotel room could cost $300 per night.
Stay in a luxury apartment in Brooklyn and you may only pay $100 for the night.
Plus you’ll have more space, a full-kitchen at your disposal and yes, even an opportunity to meet your neighbors for the week.
Oh, and parking won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
11) Outer-Space? Meh…
Let’s be straight: If you have $250,000 to $500,000 to blow and money is no object, then you need to call up Virgin Galactic and book a spot on their flight into outer space.
But you’e been warned!
While you’ll have bragging rights for a lifetime, you’re also going to spend a fortune for about 10 minutes outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.
But people are definitely interested.
It’s been said that the space tourism industry could hit $1.6 billion in revenue in its first decade.
12) Is it Time to Join a Luxury Travel Club?
If you know you’re going to travel — and travel a lot — it’s not a bad idea to consider a luxury travel club.
There are certainly plenty out there.
For the more affluent luxury traveler, you can join Exclusive Resorts.
If you’re looking for a more economical value, there’s Portico and Inspirato.
All of these clubs charge a one-time, up-front fee that give you access to their properties.
You then have to pay for your nights on top of that.
Exclusive Resorts charges about $1,100 per night, with most members choosing to travel 20-30 days per year.
That total amount is a member’s annual dues.
Portico and Inspirato allow you to book luxurious rooms and villas at a competitive rate that is only available to members.
13) The River Cruise is Cool Again
The river cruise went through a period where it was designed for the “more seasoned” luxury traveler.
And I’m not talking about the 40-60 year-old age group.
Think older.
But today, the river cruise has evolved into a cultural experience that will appease all ages.
Since the river cruise — such as an experience down the Danube River, visiting all of the little villages along the way — are great for all ages, it might just be the perfect opportunity for a multigenerational family getaway.
14) Valuable Vacations
Luxury vacations aren’t about high-dollar amount experiences.
Luxury travelers want to see the value of their hard-earned dollars.
This could mean choosing a destination that your circle of friends or family have never visited before, or traveling to an event like The Masters golf tournament — a great idea for golf fans.
Remember, luxury travel is not about the money.
It’s about the experience.
15) Tasmania, Cambodia and Vietnam
This list had to include some specific destinations, right?
Well, here are three that are a must-see this year.
Tasmania is Australia’s only island state an home to the adorable Tasmanian devil (adorable photo above).
Why is everyone raving about Cambodia?
Here’s what the New York Times says:
“From the forests of Laos to the beaches of Vietnam to the ruins of Cambodia, you can find we–conceived, well-out-fitted, well-run hotels that will sleep you in a style for hundreds of dollars a night.”
And Vietnam: We’ve been talking about this chic country for some time now.
The people are friendly, traditions remain vibrant and its history is unbelievably rich.
Travel this year, though.
As more people travel here, prices will continue to go up.
What are your luxury travel plans for 2013?

Located about two hours west of Denver, Vail and Beaver Creek are best enjoyed by staying at their respective villages.
Vail Village is a Bavarian-themed destination, with plenty of fun restaurants and unique shops, and of course, the beautiful Arrabelle hotel, which features ski-in/ski-out access.
Beaver Creek is 12 miles west of Vail, and offers a less touristy atmosphere, but the hotels aren’t as nice.
You can’t go wrong with Beaver Creek, however, especially if you stay at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa, which features the luxurious Allegria Spa.
2) Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado
Deeper into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado is beautiful Snowmass.
While some people haven’t heard of Snowmass, all luxury travelers have certainly heard of Aspen, which features plenty of high-end shopping and luxury hotels.
After skiing on Snowmasses’ countless runs, drive over to Aspen and stay a night or two at The Little Nell, a popular spot for winter honeymooners!
3) Whistler, British Columbia
Credit: Whistler Blackcomb
Whistler is one of Canada’s most beautiful destinations.
A week at Whistler Blackcomb not only offers amazing skiing, but also stunning views.
If you’re not into skiing, take a “Peak 2 Peak” gondola ride, gliding you along one of the most impressive panoramic scenes in the world.
And make sure to visit Whistler Olympic Park — a great attraction, especially for families.
4) Telluride, Colorado
Telluride might be Colorado’s best-kept secret.
Tucked away about six and a half hours southwest of Denver, Telluride offers that old mining town feel, but filled with luxurious properties.
For a reasonable price, you can stay at the Lumiere Hotel, which has the cutest bar, easy-access to ski lifts and impeccable service.
Some have called it the crown jewel of Telluride.
5) Crested Butte, Colorado
Another fun ski resort in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains is Crested Butte Mountain Resort, which features reasonably-priced lodging and some of the state’s best skiing.
This old coal mining town is only home to about 1,500 people, and holds up its small-town feel nicely.
Here’s a fun fact: Crested Butte actually hosted the Winter X Games.
The longest ski run at the resort is nearly three miles long.
6) Lake Tahoe, California
Credit: StormFront.com
When most people think of California, they think of the south — Los Angeles, San Diego and Sacramento.
But one of California’s most beautiful areas is Lake Tahoe.
Home to the largest freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevadas, Lake Tahoe offers stunning views, awesome hiking trails in the summer — and simply amazing ski runs in the winter.
There’s also plenty of luxury shopping to enjoy while in Lake Tahoe, including many unique boutique shops.
7) Mammoth, California
Like Lake Tahoe, Mammoth is another luxury mountain town in Northern California.
You’ll take plenty of photos of Mammoth Peak, enjoy a dog-sledding race and stay at some pretty luxurious hotels.
The Westin Monache Resort has its own ski lift and modern rooms that are large enough to accommodate big families — including your dog!
Make sure to eat at The Lakefront Restaurant.
This French/American restaurant offers an extensive wine selection and elk meat, which is quite tender and delicious.
8) Lake Placid, New York
Credit: Mirror Lake Inn
If you’re going to make the trip to Lake Placid, NY, you must either stay at the Lake Placid Lodge (probably the nicest place in town) or the Whiteface Lodge (the second nicest place).
Both hotels offer stunning views, plenty of luxurious amenities and so many shopping and restaurant options.
Go to the Olympic Ski Jump Complex to see professional athletes training for their winter sport season; take in a show at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts; and snowshoe Jack Rabbit Trail — just be careful not to get lost!
9) Stowe, Vermont
Located in the valley between Mount Mansfield and the Green Mountains, Stowe, Vermont, is an absolutely stunning — and luxurious — winter getaway.
Of course, go skiing on Stowe Mountain, but make sure to take a classic sleigh or carriage ride on the town’s beautiful scenic trails.
Finish off the day with dinner at the Blue Moon Cafe.
It may not look it on the outside, but this restaurant offers a romantic setting inside.
10) New York City
Credit: JazzHostels.com
Ah, the first destination that has you scratching your head.
The best part about winter in New York City is that you can do a lot outside without feeling so cold.
Maybe that’s because of all the people and traffic, but what difference does it really make?
New York City is the ultimate “let’s do something amazing” city.
Each trip is different from the last.
If you’re going in December, make sure to sneak a peak of Rockefeller Square and the massive Christmas Tree on display.
And then go frolic on 34th Street while it lightly snows outside.
New York is certainly a city filled with miracles!
11) Toronto, Canada
Cheers to our second metropolitan city on this list.
Take a trip up the platform of the CN Tower and marvel in the snow-covered city.
If you — or your spouse — is a hockey fan, take a trip to the NHL Hall of Fame.
But most importantly, make a trip over to Niagara Falls.
Sure it’s going to be really cold, but seeing those magnificent falls with snow-covered evergreens serving as the perfect backdrop is simply stunning.
12) Deer Valley, Utah
While some may argue against this notion, the Flagstaff Mountain, where Deer Valley Resort is located, rivals the Rocky Mountains in beauty and in ski-ability.
While the skiing is great in Deer Valley, the spa at The Montage is to die for.
Take advantage of the Peace of Mind: Surrender treatment for pure relaxation.
13) French Alps
Credit: The Guardian
Ah, the first destination in Europe!
The French Alps offer mountain towns and resorts that make you feel like you’re the only one in the vast abyss of the mountains.
Chamonix, France is literally located in the middle of the mountains and features plenty of high-end boutique shops and swanky restaurants.
And you’re in France, which means you make a trip to our next destination…
14) Paris, France
Welcome to the city of love, Paris, France.
There’s nothing more beautiful than gazing at an icy Eiffel Tower as snow sprinkles onto your nose.
There’s plenty of winter holiday festivals and romantic restaurants to split a bottle of the wine over.
And winter is the low-season, which means less tourists and more elbow room.
15) Tuscany, Italy
While many believe Tuscany is at its best in the fall (and it very well might be…) it’s also a treat in the winter.
Less people means you get a more authentic Tuscany, filled with plenty of community and all of the wine that wasn’t consumed during the harvest season.
Plan boutique winery tours and there’s a good chance the owner of the winery will want to meet with you.
He might even ask why you’re crazy enough to visit Tuscany in the winter.
Then who knows.
Maybe dinner with that winemaker?
16) Bern, Switzerland
Credit: BeemBee.com
The Capital of Switzerland is filled with history and plenty of high-end shops to keep you busy.
You’re close to the mountains, but you’ll just love taking in the charm of Bern.
Sip a cappuccino at a nearby café then retreat back to your room at the Bellevue Palace, an exquisite property with amenities that can only be described as the best-of-the-best.
17) Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole is beautiful in the spring, fun in the summer and relaxing in the fall.
Come winter, it’s simply amazing.
You can ski, shop, eat, spa-out, work your photography skills and so much more.
Make sure to stay at the Four Seasons.
It’s the best hotel for skiers (you get ski valet and ski school for beginners!).
And if you just want to check out the scenery, take a gondola ride up and down.
18) Sun Valley, Idaho
Sun Valley is a unique place.
And you would never think of Idaho as a luxurious state.
Go snowshoeing at the Sun Valley Nordic & Snowshoe Center, which is located at the 58,000 square-foot Sun Valley Club.
Enjoy some drinks, take in that fresh mountain air and love that chilly winter weather.
19) Chicago, Illinois
Another great city is an absolute treat in the winter.
Book a long weekend at the Peninsula Chicago, one of the city’s most luxurious hotels.
And make sure you have reservations at Everest, Chicago, where the average check is nearly $600.
During the winter is a great time to take advantage of the many museums, as there won’t be a ton of people in your way.
20) Frankenmuth, Michigan
Credit: Selective potential
Out of all the locations on this luxury winter destination list, you’d never expect to see Frankenmuth, Michigan.
You’re probably wondering where Frankenmuth is even located, or what’s so special about it.
Well, if you’re planning a vacation in the midwest in December, make a trip to Frankenmuth, about 100 miles north of Detroit.
It’s claim to fame?
The world’s largest Christmas Store.
If you stretch out the entire store, it would span more than five football fields.
If you go in February, you can take in the world-class Snowfest — an international snow and ice sculpting competition.
21) Winter Beach, Florida
A list of winter destinations isn’t complete without a beautiful beach vacation.
And what more appropriate than Winter Beach in Florida?
Wiggle your toes in the sand and sip a daiquiri at a tiki lounge.
It might be February, but it’s absolutely beautiful here.
You’ve been warned, however.
Expect plenty of snowbirds from Michigan, Ohio and everywhere else in the Midwest.
22) Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is a unique location.
Plenty of twinkling lights, fun bars and pubs and so much history.
Tourists will flock here in December, but those crowds die down come January and February.
“In winter, you wake up in this city, especially on Sundays, to the chiming of its innumerable bells, as though behind your gauze curtains a gigantic china teaser were vibrating on a silver tray in the pearl gray sky. You fling the window open the room is instantly flooded with this outer, peal-laden haze, which is part damp oxygen, part coffee and prayers.”
There isn’t much more to say about Venice.
24) Prague, Czech Republic
Like most non-skiing destinations, you need to get creative on what to do during the winter.
Prague is no different.
First, it doesn’t matter what season it is, as long as you’re staying at the Hotel Le Palais — a five-star boutique that offers timeless furnishings.
During Christmas time, you can take in countless Nativity scenes, both live and stationary.
You also have plenty of high-end shops (obviously!) to finish up that Holiday shopping.
25) The Maldives
Credit: The Telegraph
After reading about all these great winter destinations, you might just be saying, “This isn’t for me.”
Come January 1, you might want to go somewhere that has some ocean, plenty of beach and a warm sun over your head at all times.
But if you’re a beach expert, you already knew that.

Not every vacation involves relaxing on the beach or at a spa.
Sometimes, you need to work a little.
And by work, we mean shop.
So for this year’s girl’s getaway, explore some of the world’s best luxury shopping destinations.
From France to California, you’re bound to break the bank, but look pretty doing so.
1) Champs Elysées: Paris, France
Paris isn’t called the city of love for nothing.
In fact, it might just be called that because everyone loves to shop there.
So if you’ve decided to take your luxury shopping vacation to France, a stop on the champs Elysées is a must.
Warning: You’re going to spend MUCH more than just a pretty penny.
It’s easy to drop a lot of cash here, with the likes of Cartier, Chanel, Chloe and Courréges headlining the luxurious sidewalks.
2) Bond Street: London, U.K.
Mayfair’s Bond Street is filled with chic boutiques and some of the greatest jewelry stores you’d expect to find in London, including Cartier, Harry Winston, Bulgari and Asprey.
Don’t worry gentlemen, there’s plenty of options for you, as well.
Looking for a custom-tailored British suit?
There are plenty of great men’s stores that carry the finest of Italian labels.
3) Fifth Avenue: New York, New York
It should come as no surprise that New York’s Fifth Avenue made this list.
The only other question is whether or not Madison Avenue made this luxurious list.
Ladies, you probably know more about Fifth Avenue than I do — I don’t follow Sex and the City— but I do know that you can spend the most amazing 5 minutes of your life staring at the window of Tiffany’s, as made famous by Audrey Hepburn.
While you can take care of all your jewelry and clothing needs here, you can also pick up something for the kids from FAO Schwartz.
4) Bloor Street: Toronto, Canada
Walk what is known as the “Mink Mile,” a grouping of cosmopolitan shops on Toronto’s Bloor Street, and shop some of the finest department stores in the world.
Unlike most shopping destinations in the United States, Toronto’s Bloor Street is filled with plenty of internaitonal labels, such as Hermes, Prada and Gucci.
Enjoy ladies.
5) Mall of the Emirates: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Serious travelers understand that Dubai is filled with extravagant, luxury experiences.
News flash: Shopping here is amazing — especially at the Mall of the Emirates.
This mall is actually the largest mall outside of North America, with more than 470 stores, like Versace, Ferragamo and even Ralph Lauren.
If you’re looking for something a bit more cultural, don’t worry — you’re in luck.
Scattered throughout some of the hottest luxury brand stores are plenty of unique Arabic boutiques.
Hungry after a day of shopping?
You have 70 diverse restaurants to choose from before retreating to the 5-star Kempsinki Hotel attached to the mall for the night.
6) Central: Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong is a massive city, filled with plenty of luxury shopping areas.
Central is found at the center of Hong Kong’s business district and it’s filled with some pretty high-end boutiques.
All of these luxury shops aren’t just located off the street, however.
You need to enter in through a series of buildings called “Alexandra House,” “Chater House,” and “Prince’s Building.”
Inside, you’ll find your Prada, Paule Ka and Ascot Chang for some finely tailored Italian suits.
7) Grafton Street: Dublin, Ireland
You’ll find more than just a good beer in Dublin.
There’s plenty of luxurious shopping options, too.
Sure Dublin isn’t as “luxurious” as places like Paris, but it has plenty of expensive shops, including the St. Stephens Green Shopping Centre, which includes shops like Motion Picture Ladies Fashion, Peter Mark and Hunt Jewelers.
On your way out, hit up a pub for some great, hardy food and a dark Irish stout to wash it down.
8) Grove Street: San Francisco, California
Grove Street (at the corner of Grove and Gough Street) you’ll find MAC — Modern Appealing Clothing — which is a high-end speciality store that includes some fine suits and plenty of modern duds.
The glam boutique is run by a family who only caters to high-end shoppers looking for the most unique designs.
That’s because the designs come from local and international artists that you can’t find anywhere else.
9) Orchard Road: Singapore
If you can deal with the tourists, hipsters and massive crowds of shoppers, then head to Orchard Road.
Here in beautiful Singapore you’ll find all of the mainstream designers you can dream of, in addition to plenty of art galleries and unique international brands, including Diane von Furstenberg.
If you’re looking for Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Miu Miu, you’re in luck.
Orchard Road has it all.
10) Via Monte Napoleone: Milan, Italy
It should be mentioned that this list is written in no order, because you’d probably expect to see Italy closer to the top.
Don’t worry — all of these destinations are quite luxurious, including the world’s fashion capital.
The likes of Giorgio Armani, Mila Schon and Gianni Versace are found right on the tony Via Monte Napoleone.
You’ll have no trouble finding sexy Italian shoes, blouses and luxurious dresses.
11) Tretyakovsky Proezd: Moscow, Russia
Here’s a destination that maybe didn’t cross your mind:
Welcome to Moscow!
At first glance, this doesn’t look like a luxury shopping destination, but the most serious of shoppers understand what’s at stake here: showrooms of the finest of cars (think Bentley and Ferrari).
Need a new watch?
Here you can find the Swiss watch company Chopard, as well as Bulgari, Roberto Cavalli, Brioni and Gucci.
12) Rodeo Drive: Beverly Hills, California
Fans of 90s television — specifically 90210 — know all about the hippest and most luxurious shopping street in California.
Enjoy three city blocks of expensive shopping here.
You have your Hermes, Hugo Boss, Chanel and Etro.
Walk a little bit more and find your Michael Kors, David Yurman and Ferragamo.
Would you expect anything less from California?
13) Oxford Street: London, England
In addition to Bond Street, London’s Oxford Street features more than 150 shops that stretches 1.5 miles, including all of the ultra-luxurious brands you’d expect.
Think Debenhams, John Lewis and Selfridges.
No trip — specifically a shopping trip — is complete to London without a stop on Oxford Street.
You won’t miss it.
And if you’re into entertainment, there’s always a good chance at spotting a celebrity.
14) Avenue Montaigne: Paris, France
It comes as no surprise that there are two luxury shopping areas located in Paris.
I mean, Paris is home to the world’s most luxurious fashion show, so you’d expect the best of the best when it comes to shopping.
Find your Prada, Chanel and Versace — and all of its French goodness.
15) Michigan Avenue: Chicago, Illinois
We’re closing out this luxurious shopping list with a stop to America’s Midwest and Chicago, Illinois.
There’s no better shopping location in Chicago better than that Magnificent Mile.
Here on Michigan Avenue, there are countless high-end stores, luxurious restaurants and if you travel during Christmas — expect some absolutely beautiful decorations.
You’ll be able to shop at your basic Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, but these department stores are absolutely beautiful and have more clothes, shoes and jewelry than you would ever expect.
Need a getaway?
Head to Chicago for an amazing weekend filled with unbelievable shopping.
Do you have a favorite?

Today’s luxury vacation goes far beyond choosing the perfect destination or booking the best hotel.
It also requires that you bring the best technology with you.
We live in a computer-driven world today.
We’re always connected by the smartphone in our pocket, the tablet in our travel bag and the laptop stored away in our business bag.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but when you go on vacation, you want to disconnect and unwind.
So where does technology fit in?
Here’s your Ultimate Guide to Travel Technology:
The Necessary Hardware
Most luxury travelers don’t have to worry about going out to buy new hardware because they likely already have it.
But just in case they don’t — here are some of the top gadgets that can help make not only your next vacation better, but also your everyday life.
Smartphones: The iPhone 5
Unless you’ve been living under a shell, you’ve probably heard about the iPhone 5.
Apple’s smartphone turned out to be one of the most-hyped products on the planet and even described by some analysts as one of the biggest product upgrades in electronics history.
The iPhone 5 features a taller, 4-inch screen, significantly thinner body and a noticeably lighter weight.
It’s been pegged as the world’s fastest smartphone, allowing users to multitask between apps (we’ll get to those apps later!) with ease.
It’s an absolutely beautiful smartphone that features a sexy, two-tone aluminum and glass backing.
The iPhone 5 will allow you to quickly check your email, sports scores, calendars, contacts, make phone calls — but on your vacation, it’s most important function is your camera.
That’s because the iPhone 5 has one of the best cameras ever found on a smartphone.
You’ll be able to take photos (again, we have some great apps for you!), including panoramic scenes, and quickly thanks to a much-needed updated processor.
Digital SLR
If you’re hoping to get the highest quality of photos, you’ll probably want to invest in a digital SLR camera.
Back in the day these cameras would cost you an arm and a leg, but today they’re quite affordable.
Some recommendations include:
Nikon D600 —
This is a full-frame digital SLR (which means your photos won’t be cropped, allowing you to get the most out of the lens(es) you end up purchasing. Price: $2600 (with a great 24-85mm lens)
Nikon D5100 —
This is probably the best value digital SLR at $650 with a pretty sharp 18-55mm lens kit.
The D5100 lets you quickly choose various scene modes, whether it be action or landscapes.
This camera is small and light enough that you won’t even realize you’re lugging around a camera that turns out professional-quality prints.
Now of course you’ll need to pick up the most versatile lens to hook up to one of these cameras.
It’s a small, single-length lens (meaning there’s no zoom…don’t worry; you have feet to move forward and backward), that can shoot really well in low lights.
You don’t want to be lugging a heavy, 15-20 pound lens.
This 35mm prime lens only weighs 7 oz., but more importantly, it delivers stunningly sharp photos.
Now if you need a bigger zoom lens (safari anyone?), Nikon sells a great 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, which is really fast in focusing.
You can either bring a laptop, tablet or nothing at all.
Let’s back up first, however.
Why do we need to bring a computing device with us?
For a few different reasons.
We need to check and reply to our emails, make sure all of our tickets and dinner reservations are booked and the top reason: upload our photos!
You didn’t buy that fancy camera for nothing.
So what do you need?
If you’re only looking to upload your photos and clear out your camera’s memory card, you’ll just need a tablet.
Apple’s iPad is certainly the most popular, and you can buy a card reader to hook up to it, allowing you to easily upload and organize your photos.
The iPad also lets you quickly surf the net and check and reply to any emails.
It’s light and you can take it anywhere with you.
If you have some extra time on your hands and want to do some photo editing while on your vacation, then you’ll want to bring your laptop.
Having a laptop will also allow you to easily email photos and share them on your social networks.
Who really wants to do all of that while on vacation though?
Stick to the iPad.
You’ll be pleased.
Apps & More
All of those great smartphones and tablets are really nothing without some of these great apps.
Here are some of our top travel apps for luxury travel:
Kayak:
Kayak.com is the best site to compare flight and hotel prices and its app for iPhone, iPad and Android makes it even easier to compare those prices.
This should be the first app avid travelers should download.
FlyRights:
This app is for people who are paranoid by the TSA.
If they feel like their rights were violated during the security check, they can easily report the incident through the app.
Twitter & Facebook:
Of course you need to stay on top of your social networks while traveling.
Facebook and Twitter both recently updated their apps for iPhone, iPad and Android — giving users a great experience.
Instagram:
You can’t vacation without this new social network.
Instagram is like Twitter, but only with photos.
You take a photo, it crops into a square and then you can place a creative filter over it to make the photo look vintage, rad, sexy… the list goes on.
Let your followers follow your vacation though, one photo at a time.
TripIt:
Tripit is a great application that lets you plan your entire trip itinerary online and include important things like flight numbers, hotel addresses, etc.
It then uploads that information to your app, in an easy-to-read layout.
You’ll never have to wonder what’s next on your trip.
Yelp:
Yelp is the best app out there to get quick restaurant and hotel reviews.
If you’re an iPhone user with access to Apple’s personal assistant Siri, you can now ask her what are the best restaurants nearby and she’ll use Yelp to help you out.
Before you go out to eat, always check with Yelp first.
Google Translate & XE Currency:
These apps are for people traveling overseas.
Google Translate does as its title suggests — translates basic foreign language words .
And XE Currency gives you the closest estimate to how much your dollar can go while traveling in any country.
FlightBoard:
Ever catch yourself searching for the arrivals and departures board at the airport?
FlightBoard eliminates that search and gives you the information instantly.
This app also comes in handy for family or friends wondering when your flight comes in or leaves at.
GasBuddy:
Looking for the best gas prices while on vacation?
GasBuddy is an independent firm that aims to give that information to its users and they do a pretty good job at it.
The GasBuddy app detects your location and gives you the gas stations within a certain radius and their prices.
Other Luxury Gadgets
Outside of your basic electronics, there are also some nifty luxury travel gadgets that all affluent travelers should bring with them.
Here’s a list of some of our favorites:
Wine Gadgets
Wine Cruzer:
If you travel frequently with your own wine, you must look into purchasing a Wine Cruzer.
These TSA-approved traveling cases come in under 50 pounds with wine and are the best way to safely bring your favorite vintages on that next luxury vacation.
The 2-pack carrier starts at $145 and an 8-pack Pro case goes for $266.
Costa Brava Corkscrews:
The corkstrew is just as important as the glass you pour your wine into.
This luxurious brand of corkstrews makes even the amatuer wine enthusiast look like a seasoned professional.
The Gattorna corkscrew is made of solid brass and stainless steel and is based off authentic designs from the 1880s.
The classic incense wood box that houses the corkscrew makes for the perfect companion to a fine bottle of wine.
Prices are between $85-$100.
Travel Gadgets
Bose Quietcomfort Headphones:
If you’re looking for a good pair of headphones, there’s none better than Bose’s Quietcomfort 15′s.
For $299, you’ll receive a comfortable pair of headphones with excellent sound quality and the most amazing noise-cancelling technology.
You can finally go into a state of euphoria while on that plane.
Thomas Lyte Passport Holder:
There’s no reason your passport should stay in that ugly blue/red/green book.
Dress it up with one of these luxury cases by Thomas Lyte.

If you ask most golfers, anytime is the best time to golf.
But if you push them a little further with that question, they’ll undoubtedly tell you that golfing in the fall is the best time of the season.
The scenery is changing colors, the temperatures are brisk (allowing you to finally break out that new windbreaker!) and a tasty beverage at the 19th is always a great ending to a round of golf.
Here are our top 15 golf courses to hit this fall.
1. Maroon Creek Club: Aspen, Colorado
This members-only club shows off what is so fascinating about Aspen: Dramatic ski trails down magnificent Rocky Mountains, the occasional reservoir that might trap your golf ball and beautiful Aspen trees.
During the fall, the Aspens transform from green beauties to red and orange wonders, glowing in the sky.
2. The Catskill Golf Club, Catskill, New York
It’s no secret that the Catskills region is one of the country’s most desirable locations to visit in the fall.
The winding roads take drivers through some of the most glorious reds, oranges and yellows you’ll ever witness on the bordering trees.
The Catskill Golf Club is a semi-private club which has been open for play since 1927.
The nine-hole design (alternating tees for a full round of 18) is home to an annual Pro-Am event.
And during the fall, nothing is more relaxing than teeing off in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
3. Beacon Rock Golf Course: North Bonneville, Washington
The scenery of the Columbia River Gorge is certainly beautiful year-round, but it’s extra special in autumn.
The endless gorge flares up with bright oranges and yellows, making it one of America’s top drives along the Columbia River Highway.
Views of that Gorge are visible from Beacon Rock Golf Course in Bonneville, Washington, which has offered a great golf atmosphere for more than 40 years.
Considered a locally-loved course, this 18-hole course is nestled right in the magic of the Columbia River Gorge.
4. Club de golf Cowansville: Eastern Townships, Quebec, Canada
Amid massive maple and coniferous woods and highlighted by an impressive mountain range, this golf club in the Eastern Townships of Quebec offers a peaceful golfing experience during the fall season.
And only 45 minutes from Montreal, you could truly make a great vacation that involves this 72-hole course.
5. Sequoyah National Golf Club: Whittier, North Carolina
Located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, this par 72-championship course is smack dab in the middle of one of America’s top destinations for fall foliage.
Because it has great views of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you’ll not only be able to take in the breathtaking colors of fall in this beautiful region, but also enjoy a round of 18 on a challenging and dynamic course.
6. The Golf Club at Deer Chase: Linn Creek, Missouri
This Roger Null-designed course is a challenging task, no matter your level of golf experience.
Thankfully, you have the surrounding hills of the Auglaize River Valley as the perfect backdrop.
So if you hit the occasional double-bogey, don’t worry.
It’s absolutely beautiful here.
Word of advice, however.
People understand the beauty of this course and tee times can be tough to come across.
Typically, you need to reserve at least 30 days in advanced.
7. Bull’s Bridge Golf Club: South Kent, Connecticut
Oh, and once you get to hole 14 — nicknamed The Vermonster — best of luck!
This long par-4 includes a double dogleg and has been named one of the toughest holes in Vermont.
12. Pine Grove Country Club: Iron Mountain, Michigan
Located on the southeastern coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain offers affordable golf with beautiful fall views.
Once you’re done with a round of 18, you can unwind on the beautiful veranda and sip some adult beverages from the main bar.
Fall in the Upper in Peninsula is one of our country’s best kept secrets.
13. Golf at Feather River Inn
Located off the well-known Feather River Scenic Byway, the historic Feather River Inn Golf Course has been home to many golfers since 1915.
The course actually started as a practice course way back when, but has now turned into a luxurious championship-caliber course that people from San Francisco go to on a brisk fall weekend.
14. Sedona Golf Resort: Sedona, Arizona
When its flirting with triple digits in Phoenix or Tucson, it’s absolutely beautiful in Sedona — typically 15 degrees cooler on average.
That’s why golfing 4,000 feet up the Sedona Golf Resort is the perfect golf experience during the fall.
There are also plenty of orange and red trees that contrast against the red and white rock formations.
Take it all in on hole No. 10 — a par-3 that puts you at the highest point on the course, at about 4,300-feet.
This 18-hole course has more than 6,100 yards of golf goodness with plenty of beautiful landscapes, including mountains and glorious glowing trees in the fall.

The Differences Between Luxury Vacation Rentals and Hotels
Think back to the last three hotels you stayed at while on vacation.
Do you remember what they looked like?
There’s a good chance you don’t.
But there’s a probably a good chance you spent a considerable amount of money on a room that could be described as clean, but fairly bland and forgettable.
If you’re tired of forgettable experiences you’ve come to the right guide.
Luxury vacation rentals are the perfect way to enjoy your hard-earned vacation with the ones you love — including your dog!
Here are some of the biggest differences between hotels and luxury vacation rentals.
Say Goodbye to Small and Cramped
If you were asked to describe a hotel room, you would say one — maybe two — rooms that include one or two beds, a couch, desk, dresser, closet, bathroom and if you’re lucky, a mini-bar.
That doesn’t sound terrible, until you realize just how big a hotel room is.
“the average hotel room is about 325-square-feet, including the bathroom.”
That’s 7 percent of a full-size basketball court, or about the amount of space inside the 3-point line.
If the couch offers a pullout bed and there’s three people staying in the same room, things are going to get cramped.
And you only have one bathroom (Gentlemen, you know what this means).
With luxury vacation rentals you can finally stretch your legs, walk around and not have to play the waiting game when someone is in the bathroom.
Most vacation rentals are designed for families and larger parties, meaning they have several bedrooms and bathrooms, a large living room and full kitchen and dining room.
The size of the vacation rental can actually save you money in the long run.
If you have a family or group of six or more, you’ll need to pay for at least three hotel rooms over the course of your vacation.
It makes better sense to stay in one place.
It also makes it easier to have everyone in the same place for that morning meeting to go over the day’s activities.
A Gourmet Kitchen Means Less Money Spent at Restaurants
One of the biggest perks about luxury vacation rentals that people don’t even realize is the fact that most of them come with an amazing gourmet kitchen.
You’d be surprised at how much fun cooking as a family can be while on vacation.
And the best part is you’re not paying outrageous prices at restaurants plus a tip for the waiter.
Additionally, depending on the layout of a restaurant, it’s difficult to interact with your entire group.
Most luxury vacation rentals offer a large dining room, allowing for the perfect family conversation around the dinner table.
No Need to Fight the Crowds
It doesn’t matter if it’s the Quality Inn or the Ritz Carlton, hotels are filled with people.
That could mean waiting 20 minutes during check-in, a crying baby in the room next door or that annoying guy sparking a conversation with you at the free continental breakfast.
Stay at a luxury vacation rental and focus on your family and the sights — not the sightseers, business travelers or little league hockey teams.
When you go the route of a vacation rental, you’re essentially taking your home with you.
The only people that can annoy you are your children, but that’s what grounding is meant for.
And wine.
Management is Easy to Reach at a Luxury Vacation Rental
If you have an issue at a hotel on a weekend or after 5 p.m. on weekdays, you’ll be lucky to speak to a manager.
Instead, you’ll have to deal with the night auditor, who can never really help you.
A perk of a luxury vacation rental is that you’re typically renting it from a family or couple who owns the home.
Before signing the rental agreement, you’ll likely have an opportunity to meet them and also help out a small business.
Many people in mountain and beach towns turn a second home into a small business.
You might just feel better helping Main Street out than a corporate hotel chain.
Owners of vacation rentals will stay out of your way, but in case of an emergency, you’ll have their direct phone number.
Where should I travel to and during what time of year?
Now that you’re convinced about making the switch from hotels to luxury vacation rentals, it’s time to decide where you want to travel.
The best places to look are your favorite vacation spots.
Do you make a family trip to Orlando and go to Disney World every year?
Maybe you take a skiing vacation out to Colorado?
Destinations you’re familiar with are a great place to start because when you stay a vacation rental, it will open a new world of opportunities.
It will be like visiting that destination for the first time.
But for those who still want something different, don’t worry.
There are plenty of options.
What are some of the top destinations?
The folks at Family Vacation Critic offered a great top 10 list, which includes destinations like Hawaii, the Florida Panhandle and Hilton Head, S.C.
“Most people think world-class golf courses and full-service tennis courts when they think of Hilton Head, but the more than 100 miles of bike paths, 12 miles of inviting white-sand beaches, parks and nature preserves that capture the island’s beauty and wildlife, along with a quaint harbor town featuring plenty of boutique-style shops and fine restaurants, make Hilton Head a popular destination for family vacationing. From boating excursions and myriads of water sports to up-close encounters with wildlife and hiking and biking, families particularly enjoy the wonder of nature and the outdoors in Hilton Head.”

If you’re looking for a fantastic ski getaway, there are countless luxury vacation rentals to choose from in beautiful Colorado.
Paying the Absolute Best Price for Your Luxury Vacation Rental
Depending where you’re traveling to and what time of year, the prices on luxury vacation rentals can become a bit steep.
Thankfully, there are some ways to avoid high costs and enjoy luxury at a great price.
Travel during the off-season
There are off-seasons for everything: Weddings, professional sports and of course — travel!
While luxury vacation rentals aren’t as common as say, a discounted dinner at Chile’s, but they are becoming more popular.
If you hope to take advantage of a flash sale, you must remember to act fast.
There’s a reason they’re called flash sales: They’re typically gone in a blink of an eye…or a flash.
While flash sales are being more utilized for luxury vacation rentals, they’re still dominated by hotels.
Follow sites like American Express’ Vente-Privee for the best flash sales for vacation rentals.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate
If you walk into anyone hotel in America today there’s next to no chance of being able to negotiate a cheaper rate.
You might be able to get a promotional rate, but straight up negotiating is never an option.
This is where the beauty of luxury vacation rentals comes into play.
Being that you’re only dealing with the owner of the home you’re staying at, there’s a much higher likelihood of being able to bring that overall price down.
There’s especially a good chance at negotiating during a destination’s off-season.
Here are some things you can say to the home owner to help bring that price down:
- “The final price is just a bit outside of my budget, is there any room to bring it down?”
- “Since we’re traveling in the off-season, there’s a chance that you wouldn’t have any business at all. Could we lower the final price to (whatever you think is fair)?”
- “Our family was really hoping to enjoy a nice vacation together, is there anything we can do to help lower the price?”
It’s important to remember that you don’t want to insult the owner.
They’ve spent a good amount of their own money to make your luxury vacation rental top-of-the-line.
If you’re too pushy with price, they may not want to deal with you at all.
Traveling With Extended Family and Friends Lowers the Price
One of the most obvious ways to lower the price is to split the cost among family members and friends.
Of course, you’re not going to have your 9-year-old daughter chip in her allowance money, but let’s say you’re traveling with aunts, uncles and cousins, you can always ask to help with the final price.
In fact, by staying at a larger vacation rental, you might be more inclined to travel with more family and friends.
If you split everything down the middle, your vacation could actually be significantly cheaper.
Plus, you get to spend time with people that you’re close to.
The bottom line is is that there’s always some wiggle room when it comes to prices on luxury vacation rentals.
Making the most out of your luxury vacation rental
Take a deep breathe.
- You’ve been convinced to finally ditch staying at hotels while on vacation
- After much vetting, you’ve decided on the perfect destination
- And you were even able to get the absolute best price.
Now it’s time for the fun part: Making the most of your vacation!
There are more ways to get the most out of your vacation than filling your itinerary with activities in your destination.
Here are 7 great ways to make the most out of your luxury vacation rental
1) Bring your puppy:
If you’re driving to your vacation rental, there’s a good chance that you can also bring your other best friend with you!
Most vacation rentals allow you to bring a pet, but check with the owner to ensure it’s ok.
Most of the time, the owner will require a little extra on the security deposit.
Save on kennel fees and truly bring the whole family with you.
2) Family game night:
The best part about a vacation is that you’re totally disconnected (or at least you should be) from the real world.
So while you can enjoy a family game night at your own home, doing it on vacation is more enjoyable because you don’t have to worry about staying up late and going to work or accomplishing a long to-do list the next morning.
3) Travel as a local:
Since you’re in a gorgeous house, mansion or estate — your luxury vacation rental — you should act like you live in your destination.
Check out sites like Open Table or Yelp to find what are the best local favorite restaurants.
4) Secure a fun rental car:
If you’re flying into the destination, let your vacation start the moment you arrive at the airport.
Rent a fun rental car for the week.
If you’re staying in a destination that has warm weather, secure a convertible or a sports car.
5) Take a class:
I’m not talking about a geometry or history class — something definitely more fun.
If you plan on utilizing the amazing kitchen in your luxury vacation rental, why not take a cooking class?
Some chefs will meet you at a local market to pick out ingredients that help you prepare the meal for the evening right in your home.
An art class on the beach also sounds nice.
6) Family portrait:
If you have the entire family together, there’s no better time to snap an updated family portrait.
Call up a photographer to meet you at your vacation rental or somewhere in the destination you’re traveling in and set up an hour or two for a photography session.
Being that the photography industry is completely digital these days, you can easily purchase prints online from most photographers.
Many destinations have a place where you can rent bikes for the day.
Biking is the best way to experience a new destination.
Are you an experienced luxury vacation rental traveler?
How do you make the most out of your vacations?
Vacations are supposed to be memorable and relaxing.
By making the leap from the hotel to the luxury vacation rental, your next vacation can be all of that and more.
